Small milestones and some Friday remainders
Merlin Mann | Oct 1 2004
Wow. Crazy month. One hundred fifty thousand unique nerds stopped by here in the last 30 days. That’s just nuts. God knows I’d love to give most of you a peck on the cheek for it, but for now I’ll just say “thanks a million.” So to concurrently celebrate our one month annniversary, 400th Google Group member, and the soft launch of our sweet 43F Schwag Room, I’m doing what any productive person would do: I’m taking the weekend off. Still I wanted to leave you with something, so here’s another quick batch of reamaindered tips to play with and cogitate upon. Have fun, enjoy your weekend, and see you kids on Monday.

Regarding “record your haircut” - or, do what I do: Have your wife cut your hair at home. Quick, free, low-maintenance #2 clipper ‘do. Not for everyone, I admit, but if you’re a clipper guy (or gal, I suppose) already… (This clipper involves no vacuum cleaner, so hold the “Suck-Cut” jokes, thanks.) » POSTED IN:

Joe, I’m right there with you! cept I just do it myself. (maybe that’s why I get all the weird looks) great list (yet again) Merlin. Have a great weekend. » POSTED IN:

The Google group is just BEGGING for an RSS feed. Subscribing to email newsletters is so 2003 :) I used to cut my own hair with clippers, until I discovered that Los Angeles hair salons are filled with gorgeous women. Nothing beats a good shampooing, especially when you say “Oh yes harder!” » POSTED IN:

Nathan: Add “/feed/msgs.xml” to the URL of the google group. Thus: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/43Folders becomes http://groups-beta.google.com/group/43Folders/feed/msgs.xml Cheers. » POSTED IN:

No one should be using the function keys for Exposé, by the way! Hot corners are the most perfect user interface method ever designed. Hot corners (and edges) obey Fitt’s law[1] and my experience bears out that they are much faster than keyboard shortcuts. I have the upper left set for show desktop, the lower right for show all, and the lower left for show all for this application. I love using Exposé to drag and drop between windows buried under each other. » POSTED IN:

On the haircut, I’m very lucky. One of our friends is a former professional hairdresser. She’s the ONLY PERSON who has ever given me the exact haircut I’ve asked for. And, John, I completely agree with you about the hot corners. Thats the way I’m used to using Exposé. I’ve very rarely used the function keys. » POSTED IN:

No one should be using the function keys for Exposé Huh? That sounded a bit like a pronouncement, John. :) Everybody works differently, and I for one really prefer to keep my hands on the keyboard. » POSTED IN:

The key is to keep your hands wherever they are - if you’re using the mouse, then keep your hand on the mouse. If you’re using the keyboard, keep your hand on the keyboard. (IMHO). In my case, I’m using a Powerbook with the trackpad, so it’s a matter of moving my hands down a bit to use the trackpad, or up a bit to use the function keys. Since I seem to be more accurate nailing a corner than the correct function key, I’ve started using the trackpad, even though I try to stick to keys for most operations. » POSTED IN:

Hey Merlin, big fan of the 5ive’s and now becoming a fan of 43Folders and, by extension, GTD. I could use a clarification if you would: how does one display a non-Unix delimited text file with GeekTool or is that my problem? To use this effectively, I need to share some of my lists with others in my department and they don’t use BBEdit. Any text file I create with TextEdit or Word ends up without line breaks in GeekTool even with Force Carriage Returns on. » POSTED IN:
