MyBlogLog to track outgoing links
Merlin Mann | Mar 3 2005
Like Andy, I’m loving MyBlogLog. Drop a teeny chunk of code into your page templates, and watch which links people click on to leave your site, in virtually real time. I added it last night, and it’s already totally fascinating and instructive. Nice work, Eric, and thanks for the tip! 23 Comments

It’s really sad to be the first person to comment on a link about yourself, but hell with it! The site is super slick and effective all because of Cloudspace (www.cloudspace.com). I just had a fun idea — they totally executed on it :) »

Not at all, Eric. I think this will become a very popular service. It rocks. I’d add searching/filtering in a future cut, but I’d wager that’s on the white board even now. :) »

This is just about the niftiest thing I’ve ever seen. That little snip of code opened a very big window. Wow! »

Hmph. NEW ways to spend time thinking not about what I should be thinking about or EVEN about my blog contents but about what OTHER people think about my blog contents. »

To pimp my own kool-aid, I just wrote an article named MyBlogLog Dissected which looks a bit into how the JavaScript works and how it could be improved. »

A propos of nothing, one thing I do like about this app is that it just kind of arrived in what appears to be a pretty solid release (I too have a few little niggles, for sure, but they’re minor considering it’s a first public cut to my knowledge). No throat-clearing, no splashy campaign, and no 10 or 15 insincere months of “BETA” splashed across the home page. They made something and put it out and now people are going to buy it without having to be brow-beaten with the weaseley “It’s only a Beta!” clause. Seems like a classy operation so far. »

SOLD! Great stuff this. And the wonder is in the details - spot the totals at the top of the stats table. Instead of the ever confusing “hits” (page and unique) they show “page views” and “readers”. GENIUS that, especially the latter as that’s the key number so many people want to know and there it is, IN PLAIN ENGLISH. Installed it this afternoon, purchased it this evening. THAT’S good software. »

Very cool. Thanks for pointing this out Merlin. From when I read your post till it was working took well under 10 minutes. I agree it could do more, but what it does it does well. If it did a whole lot of other stuff I might not have included the code. I just want to know what are the most popular links on my page. Nothing more, nothing less. »

To bad it doesn’t work with tabbed browsing. If you open something in a new tab you get no record of it in MyBlogLog. I open everything in a new tab, especially in a blog where the links are in the middle of text you’re reading. »
