Podcasts of non-commercial and public radio shows
Merlin Mann | Apr 30 2005
As more and more folks (like, say, me) want their radio to go these days, numerous public radio programs are getting wise and starting to offer their stuff in podcast format. I’m thinking I’ll start collecting good-looking sources for public and non-commercial radio podcast indices here. Small for now, but it’ll grow with your help, I hope.
I love getting On the Media (podcast), The Antique Phonograph Music Program (podcast), and Harry Shearer’s very swell Le Show (podcast) this way—now, c’mon Fascinatin’ Rhythm! Got a good link that collects free podcasts from non-commercial radio shows? Have a favorite or obscure program to recommend in podcast format? Here's two of my favorites...
Here’s two of my favorites that are not public radio (I realize I’m not sticking to topic—sorry):
smallbizpod: how to use blogs, RSS, and podcasting in biz
SpaceMusic by TC: way-cool ambient and electronic music hosted in English by the very personable TC in Rotterdam, Netherlands

KCRW podcasts a lot of their stuff. I’m fond of Left, Right and Center which I usually listen to during my lunch break but it’s not always a convenient.
Now if only This American Life would get on the bandwagon I would be the happiest iPod owner in the world. (Though it seems doubtful because they sell Audible.com subscriptions.)

No podcasts for This American...
No podcasts for This American Life, according to their FAQ:
http://thisamericanlife.org/pages/faq.html#podcasts
Will you offer Podcasts? “Sadly, no, not in the forseeable future. One thing that’s nice about our arrangement with Audible is that it provides a small stream of money – not much, to be sure, but some – that we split with the show’s contributors. We like that it’s possible for them to get paid again for their work. There’s no easy-to-administer method for us to compensate contributors for Podcasts.”
Have you seen the ones...
Have you seen the ones on BBC.co.uk? I haven’t got time to find links right now but you could search for “In Our Time” and “The Reith Lectures”
Do give a listen to...
Do give a listen to The Bitterest Pill (The Dan Klass Show: Comedy, Commentary, and Music From a Stay At Home Dad/Shut In) http://thebitterestpill.com
Dan’s an actor, comedian, and an intelligent, sharp and witty man, and a hell of a nice guy. His (about) twice a week program is a terrific take on the foibles, frustrations, and joys of his life in Los Angeles. Just the right length, too. And as a bonus, Dan’s amazingly funny 6 year old Son Hudson makes the occasional appearance.

I have setup a podcast...
I have setup a podcast for a friend of mine who has started producing his own small “radio” show using Garageband and Audacity. I’d love to drive a little a traffic to him (be gentle as it is my server) and get him some major feedback. He talks mostly about motivation and decision making, as that is his area of expertise. Check him out at Prairie Beacon Radio
I like the KCRW podcast...
I like the KCRW podcast of “Good Food” - weekly live farmer’s market reports from LA plus restaurant and cooking info. “Splendid Table” from Minnesota Public Radio is also available online, but it’s streamed as Real not podcast as MP3, much harder to take with you unless you go to the effort to rip it.

Very timely post Merlin. Looking for the same info myself. I thought you guys might have missed something. So I went to NPR and did a search for Podcast, thinking I’d get a long list. I got nothing, other then stories about Podcasting. Pretty sad.
BTW: KCRW is the best radio station in America. Used to get it streamed, now I get it (no must though) via Poscasts.

Podcasts from australian non-commercial radio station triplej - lots of interviews, and Dr Karls science show is excellent. http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/listen/podcast.htm

WFMU (independent freeform radio station broadcasting at 91.1 fm in the New York City area, at 90.1 fm in the Hudson Valley, and live on the web) podcasts 15 of their usually excellent shows at:

KCRW only podcasts talk shows...
KCRW only podcasts talk shows due to the concern that they could be sued by the big labels. They even edit out the music on Harry Shearer’s “Le Show”. So, Morning Becomes Eclectic isn’t going to have a podcast any time soon.

I can’t seem to get the In Our Time podcast working. The XML link via PublicRadioFan.com gives a 404 and the BBC’s page doesn’t have a feed, just a straight mp3 download.

Merlin, you are probably already aware of this, but an AM in your city is set to begin what could be called Podcasting in reverse. KYCY-AM is an Infinity-owned station that is apparently launching a format that features listener-submitted Podcasts. More info on the station’s site:

While it isn’t exactly public radio, part of the group of core personalities and techies at The Screen Savers (on TechTV before it was subsumed by G4) have started a weekly podcast. Originally titled Revenge of the Screen Savers they changed the name to This Week In Tech (TWIT) and it is surprisingly (or not so surprisingly) good for only having four shows under its belt.
You can get to it from http://thisweekintech.com or http://twit.tv and they are looking at adding a video podcast in the near future if they can get the tech worked out.
One interesting aspect of this podcast is that all of the participants are in different parts of the US and the host, Leo Laporte, is the only one on a broadcast quality microphone - the rest join in via Skype (or, this week, TeamSpeak).
