Open Thread: The "43 Folders" of health and fitness sites?

Over the last six months or so, I’ve gotten a lot of requests via email from people looking for (yes, thanks, more than one person called it this)the 43 Folders of (health|exercise|fitness) sites.”

Naturally I set my Google fu in motion, fully expecting to turn up dozens of excellent sites on how to stay motivated about workouts, how to eat properly, and how to psych (or “hack,” if you prefer) yourself into straightening out, losing weight, and getting that fat ass in motion.

Funny thing: I came up pretty thin — and not in that good, healthy, slender kind of thin way. In at least three sittings of searching over the past few months, I just did not turn up more than a couple of independent sites that really blew me away. Really surprising, and maybe I was just looking in the wrong places. Like under a 12-pack of beer and a rib roast.

BUT. I’m sure they’re out there, and I can’t think of smarter people to ask than you, so you tell me: what’s your favorite website or blog about getting healthy? What are your favorite apps for tracking progress and watching a diet? Who’s got the best “health hacks?”

Post your faves in comments and help your geeky friends get as theoretically fit as they are theoretically organized.

Granted, I’m biased, but I think in some ways, my fitness blog / pod & vodcast platform / video repository is close to what you’re looking for. One article I wrote in particular was straight-up GTD, though usually I keept it to fitness and health.

Since I’m an avid fan of 43 Folders, I’d love some feedback from people reading this comment about how I can make my site more useful and enjoyable.

BTW, I am aware, and I’ll warn you ahead of time, that I have a little “salesy” / “hypey” product info in certain places on the site. I know that turns some people off (me included depending on my mood), but it also gets my courses into the hands of people who can benefit (and many have, thankfully).

That said, the majority of the site is hype-free, and full of quality content, with a decidely “behavioral” slant to fitness. (After all, it doesn’t matter what you know about getting in shape unless you DO it.) In fact, inspired by people like Steve Pavlina (www.stevepavlina.com), I’ve decided to make almost everything I do freely available. Still gotta make a living, but I’m definitely turning away from hypey sales letters when I can.

Anyway, here is a link: http://www.jeremymarkum.com/fitness/fitportal/full-entry/getting-things-done-sage-style/

(That references the GTD-ish article, otherwise just go to the main page to access the rest.)

Again, I welcome feedback and input from this community!

Some resources: Adele Puhn “The 5 day Miracle Diet” (balanced carbs, healthy eating, excercise. Covert Bailey “Fit or Fat” (outmoded diet ideas, but good agitprop for exercise - like “Be A Better Butter Burner!”). The Philosopher’s Diet (forget the author, but probably the most geek friendly way to think about these things). I fall off the fit wagon alot, but often find myself listening to the 43F podcasts while on the treadmill actually… IMO, the diet exercise habit is like the hipster PDA: better to get moving than to refine the plan too minutely at the beginning.

all diets really come down...

all diets really come down to eating sensible amounts. once you have a sense of how much calories, protein, carbs, and fat you should be eating a day (lots of sites have advice on this, or one visit to a dietician should do it for you - it’s good to get advice specific to your body type and activity level), the hard part is tracking it.

the best way i’ve found to really do that is fitday: http://www.fitday.com/ it does one thing, and it does it well (and for free): keeps track of everything you put in your body (calories, fat, carbs, protein, and a whole bunch of nutrients)

if you are going to use it, there’s an initial annoying phase of manually entering in nutrition info for foods not in the database, but after a while pretty much anything you eat will either be in their system or in your “custom foods.” nice features to get averages over time and such too.

food diaries keep you honest. this is an easy way to do it.

My favorites: Stumptous (http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php): for weight lifting and functional training ideas - aimed at women, but also good for guys.

Calorie King (Mac friendly, download for your computer: http://www.calorieking.com/software/) and Fitday (online: http://www.fitday.com/): for tracking eating / excercise / weight. I started with FitDay and then migrated to CalorieKing because a) I wanted the records to be on my computer not theirs and b) I don’t ALWAYS have a net connection.

The site www.nutritiondata.com has tons of nutrition information compiled by the USDA and methods of putting that information to use to work off some of that flab off your body. The only health site of note I’ve found.

I don’t know if there’s a web site for this, but I use my dog as a role model: It’s a rule in our house that when we see the dog stretch, the humans have to stretch. If the dog laps from his water bowl, I drink a glass of water. If the dog jumps around and gets excited, I jump around.

My goal is to walk my dog a cumulative 60 minutes per day. He enjoys walking so much, it makes it more fun for me.

The reason a 43 'style'...

The reason a 43 ‘style’ weight loss site is hard found, is that eventually people lose their weight. Reach their goal. There is a drop off in user participation, because they have been told by that very site they are done. They lost the 40 pounds they originally joined the site for. The site loses it’s relevance.

GTD? If anyone can say they are perfectly efficient, then they can use both sides of their brain independently… or something superman like. Our goal here is an organizationaly perfect lifestyle; a weight loss site’s is 40 pounds lighter. You can reach the second one.

Dieting can be made into a lifestyle, though. That is something that I think The Hacker’s Diet presents. A life style change, not a ‘diet’. Thus a goal that is perfection, one you can just always improve towards. Perpetual user base.

So if there is a “Hacker’s Diet” community site, go there. I don’t know of anything but the document itself.

http://www.healthy-girl.com has a new, usually very good, tip every day. One feature I like is a weekly lo-cal “hack” of a favorite high fat recipe.

Dotti’s weight loss zone looks like web 0.1 in terms of design, but it’s great for content. She’s got hundreds of restaurant menu items listed with the nutritional info. I usually check it before I go out to a chain to see what I will be getting myself into. http://www.dwlz.com/

I wish I could find a good health hacker type forum too. So many of them are full of cliques and overly sweet references to DH and DD and DS and icons of hearts and gunk!

@Tracey Yeah, I like Dottie’s weight loss zone for all detail on chain restaurant menus. I made my self a little reference sheet for all my local chains. A quick look at the numbers convinces me to avoid the supersizes and cheese. Dottie recommends strategies, like special-ordering your What-a-burger with a small bun and no bun-oil. (Egad! What is bun oil?)

http://completerunning.com/running-blogs/

Losing weight is all about managing goesins/goesouts. Eat less calories than you burn, and you’re losing weight.

The RBF is a collection of like-minded bloggers and runners. The important part is not what you do to stay fit, but that you keep doing it. There’s a ton of folks out there who keep each other honest.

So lace ‘em up, put air in the tires, and put on the goggles - it’s time to get fit.

I think it’s very difficult to find a genuine health/fitness site. Almost every health site or podcast I’ve come has used its free content to sell me something. I noticed this back in August and blogged about it then.

I think a lot of...

I think a lot of this sort of thing is probably community based. For example LiveJournal hosts a number of pretty good communities (yes, there’s more there than teenagers with a predilection for unfortunate poetry). Those are actually particularly useful for people interested in pure fitness—-the largest LJ running community has everyone from newbies wondering which shoes to buy (“go to a real running store and get your gait tested”) to experienced runners and pro-ams (who probably posted that comment). A lot of general info is also locked in the sites for various speciality sports: Triathletes have SlowTwitch (http://www.slowtwitch.com), Cyclists have BikeForums (http://www.bikeforums.net) and Runners have CoolRunning (http://www.coolrunning.com) as a start.

Diet is going to be hard though, weight loss via dieting is such a racket.

Sally Squires at the Washington...

Sally Squires at the Washington Post has a regualr column in the Health section called the Lean Plate Club, which is dedicated to eating right, usually avoiding fad diets and other trendy weight loss tactics.

There is a weekly online chat that accompanies the columns where readers can ask questions, exchange advice, etc. Online tools like the already-mentioned FitDay have gotten acolades on the chat. I like reading the chats since they give “real world” feedback on tips to eat right and people usually aren’t selling anything (all comments in the chat are moderated by a producer). It also creates a community feel where regular chat participaters check in on each others progress and provide encouragement. The only downside is that since the chats are archived in transcript format it’s hard to go back and locate something later, thought I think there may be a Google hack to search the transcripts only?

Lean Plate Club chat (registration required): http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/linkset/2005/03/24/LI2005032401720.html

PS - The Post has a number of other great online chats in a variety of topics. Definitely a productivity killer at work if you feel the need to tune in live, but every discussion is archived later.

No site to recommend but...

No site to recommend but a philosophy:

I found that all the times I tried exercise plans in the past my approach was all wrong. It shouldn’t be a chore and you shouldn’t be out to lose weight. There should only ever be two goals for exercise: (1) Feel better! (2) Perform better.

My old plans failed because I thought about the scale too much.

Now I keep a log of how far I ran and in how much time (to keep a pace score). Once I started to approach it that way (accomplishing goal #2) it became something of a game (accomplishing most of #1) and I’ve kept on it for almost four months now. (A personal best.)

It helps to have the attitude of I should AT LEAST have 20 minutes per day too. (Which, if you don’t have 20 minutes per day to do something like this that you enjoy, you need to rethink your life, eh?)

Hacker's diet is more of...

Hacker’s diet is more of a starter kit. If you’re looking for the 43 folders of fitness it would probably be crossfit.

Crossfit is awesome and hardcore. And it’s a type of plan that doesn’t “end”. Someone upthread said that a lot of sites are focused on a weight-loss goals (i.e. lose 40 lb. ) Crossfit is about getting more and more fit. If you think you’re fit, I dare you to try one of their workouts (http://www.crossfit.com/). For most people it will be a humbling experience. It’s like what Greg Lemond said: “(Training) doesn’t get easier; you just get faster”.

Also, Lean and Hungry Ftness is good (http://www.leanandhungryfitness.com/). It’s kinda a linkblog with commentary on various fitness articles, physiology explanations, etc.
