Megazoomer: Full-screen mode for Cocoa apps
Merlin Mann | Jul 5 2006
Speaking of full-screen functionality, lots of people have been writing to mention Megazoomer, a free, SIMBL-based bundle that fakes full-screen mode within any Cocoa app, including Safari and Textmate.
It should be great to have this in Textmate, whose functional depth you lose working in an app like WriteRoom. Haven’t had time to play with Megazoomer much yet, but it certainly looks promising. [ thanks to lots of people for sending this one ] 9 Comments

Wow, this is really, really cool. I’m going to spend day and night in my brand new full-screen terminal :p! Thanks a lot. »

As was pointed out on the MacUpdate comments for megazoomer, the current version of megazoomer (.3) disables VLC’s full screen mode. Also, anecdotally, I started to experience instability and unexpected crashes in Mail after installing megazoomer, which went away when I uninstalled megazoomer (i.e. removed it from the SIMBL plugins folder); this could’ve been a conflict with something else on my system, though. Couldn’t spare the time to test & troubleshooot. »

A little bit of blatant self promotion (sorry!) VoodooPad 3.0 which was just released like- 6 hours ago, has a new full screen editing mode as well. I was first turned on by the idea by you mentioning the feature in MacJournal a long time ago. So I tried it out and fell in love with it, it’s great. »

Megazoomer is broken (at least on Intel macs, can’t speak for other models.) If you’re considering using it for more than just peeking at the functionality, just skip it. iSquint, Visial Hub, VLC, Textmate, Mail, Parallels, Safari and others all have problems running from the minor (textmate’s blogging bundle doesn’t work) to major (crashes in safari and Mail sometimes needs to be quit and restarted because it gets stuck.) My ignorant guess is that it has untrapped NS exceptions that it lets bubble up. I really want it to work right but it just doesn’t right now. I’ve mailed the author but have not got a reply yet. »

Yeah, I’d recommend against Megazoomer. Installed it and all of a sudden any app I had which had employed AppleScript Studio anywhere along its production line kept throwing errors left and right. Quite glad to get rid of that puppy. »

Megazoomer caused an “NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError: 4 (1)” for several apps (Onyx, TinkerTool Sys) and caused several others not to open at all. Really cool concept but unstable on an Intel machine. »

![]() it's still pretty wonky ......Submitted by nex (not verified) on July 6, 2006 - 2:07am.
it’s still pretty wonky … i canceled the download when i read on their site that it doesn’t support carbon apps at all. (i suppose this really means it only supports cocoa apps.) what i would really need is an app that gives me more control over window sizes. e.g. recently i opened an app on my 12” iBook that i had previously opened on an external 19” screen. obviously the window didn’t fit on the notebook screen, and i couldn’t get to that one corner that allows resizing … and the zoom/maximise button was greyed out. (maybe the new “gather windows” button would’ve worked?) well, i think i’ll just look into how to do this with applescript. it should be rather trivial to resize a window such that its decoration is actually outside the display, no? just assign that and an undo function to hotkeys, and voilà, as good as fullscreen mode for all your apps. but before i go about reinventing the wheel, does anyone know about an already existing hack that lets you, for example, make the zoom buttons really maximise a window? »
