AskMe: How to become an eccentric (or just look like one)
Merlin Mann | Jul 13 2006
Suggest eccentricities for me to adopt | Ask MetaFilter From a fun AskMe thread:
This reminds me of that stage where teenage girls randomly start to affect a terrible british accent, or when college freshmen suddenly stop wearing shoes and take up raw foods and the shakuhachi. Of course, this is not to say that I haven’t had ideas of my own. ’Fess up: what was your goofiest affectation and what made you stop it? Clarification (2006-07-15 10:20:20): The “In my quest…” portion above is a quotation from the link that is referenced; it’s not actually me asking for help to (God forbid) become more eccentric. This confused some people, and, well, I regret your confusion if you have any and hope this clarification helps. — The Management 98 Comments

In last year of high school & freshman year college, I took all my notes for classes in Norse runes I had learned when a friend and I read Lord of the Rings. I also wrote veryverytiny… in Norse runes. I wrote a lot of “short stories” then, too — can’t read any of it now, even if I could SEE it. I think I also told people in my fourth grade class I was an android….and sometimes that I was a Vulcan. And sometimes that I was a Vulcan android. »

In response to Rhea’s comment about writing titles of films or books you want to remember in a pocket notebook, when I do that on a Blackberry, people just think I’m addicted. When I use paper, it’s a charming affectation. In response to Wayne’s comment about wearing watches on the right wrist, I have worn a watch on alternate wrists on alternate days. I think I was allergic to the metal in the band, but I liked wearing that watch, and no one seemed to notice. It seems like writing small is an extremely popular eccentricity. I find that my writing is much neater when it is smaller; it gets harder to read when I write larger. Of course, that means that I need to always carry fine point pen. »

Long hair. Stopped by enlisting in the military. When I got out I was certain that I would grow it back, but as soon as it started to touch my ears I freaked. I think that you should go with the monocle for the sake of alliteration - Merlin Mann’s Monocle. Now that’s cool, and eccentric. »

I oscillate between the monocle and the pince nez. I do think the monocle will win out — just so that I can have it fall to the floor and shatter whenever I’m visibly outraged. »

I saw a movie or read a book where the main character only chewed Black Jack gum. So I went out and found a big carton of it. I proceeded to carry around a pack of gum everywhere. People would ask me for a stick of gum and I’d hand them one out my pack of 5 and they’d immediately spit it out because, frankly, there’s a reason the gum is so hard to find, it tastes pretty bad. I finally gave up and threw about 10 packs into the garbage can. »

Most of the teenage girls I knew had perfectly normal British accents. Maybe it depends on where you live… 8-) »

I label all of my white socks to keep the pairs “monogamous” throughout their lives. I feel it leads to a more even wear. And why would I ever want to stop that? »

My wife knew a German girl who kept a peach pit (stone) in her mouth at all times. The same one. All the time. Last we saw her she was on her third, having lost the previous two accidentally. I can’t recall if she had swallowed them or spit them out by accident, but quite different eccentric, I believe. »

Back when I used to listen to Bob Dylan ALOT, I went thru a phases where I only spoke to people in Dylan lyrics. This only lasted 2 days, thankfully. »
