Sloan get organized for new record

One of my favorite bands, Sloan, has a new record called Never Hear the End of It that just came out last week in Canada (currently only purchasable via import in the US; in Canada, you can buy it on MapleMusic).

While recording the CD, Sloan also shot a bunch of short in-studio videos, including a couple that reveal their innately organizational side.

In “Shades ‘o’ Sloan”, Murph shares the color-coded card system they used to track each band members’ song status. “I’m red, and Jay’s yellow, Patrick’s green, and Andrew’s blue…”

In “Sneak Peek,” the color system returns, vaguely Mondrian-like, plus you get to hear samples from a few of the songs. I’m a big fan of “Set in Motion” (which you’ll see is Chris Murphy Red).

The tracks I’ve heard from the record are really good — probably their best since Between the Bridges.

Also, if you ever get the chance, do catch Sloan on tour when they come to your town. Always a really fun show.

It's so weird to be...

It’s so weird to be out on the web and find this site and this site and this site and this site and end up at a place you think is so far away from everything you’ve known - and then find someone from your own backwater province.

Yay Teh Intarweb!

If y’all want real rock, try www.houseofrock.ca. You can’t go wrong with any of those.

And I’d LOVE to see some info on cd/dvd organization. I have my own quirky system, but it’d be great to see what others do.

Back at Halifax West High...

Back at Halifax West High School, I was a year ahead of Chris Murphy and got a chance to see him in a couple of other bands (“Kearney Lake Road” and for a while in “Black Pool”) … he’s always been mad talented!

I’d second checking them out on eMusic which has got a good chunk of their back-catalogue:

Also second the New Pornographers (and the solo stuff from their members: A.C. Newman, Neko Case).

I don't understand about this...

I don’t understand about this 30-mile border limit for expected Sloan fans, I live in Edinburgh (Scotland) and think Sloan are pretty good too! Aren’t their songs on the interweb which pretty much anyone in the world can connect to, listen, then ROCK?

Also- I second advice about the New Pornographers, they are amazing, check out “sing me spanish techno” and “letter from an occupant”. Canada has a good crop of bands, I also love the Weakerthans and for something old-school, Rush still do it.

Please write an article on how to organise my increasing cd/dvd collection, as I looked through my DVDs and found 9 which were still in wrapper, two of which I was about to go and buy again…

Woo! I just had a dream last night that involved my going to a Sloan show. I must have been receiving new album waves as I slept. Hopefully they’ll get back down here soon. I’ve seen them a bunch of times in Albany and Buffalo and each show was great.

Wow, somebody who doesn't live...

Wow, somebody who doesn’t live within 30 miles of the border knows Sloan. Why does Canadian music just rock so much better? Merlin, hope you check out the New Pornographers, too.

Oh, and I feel your pain. I am a lifelong Stateside Hoodoo Gurus fan. Saw them in ‘87 never could find them playing near me ever again, and now never will. BTW, Sloan plays in Detroit like once a year, they have a brother or somebody who’s a DJ (they played his birthday party one year.).

Sloan was a bit of...

Sloan was a bit of an indie rock sensation on US college radio in the mid-90s, so tracks from One Chord to Another were probably my first exposure.

Later, I bought a copy of Navy Blues and was initially luke warm, but one day I was driving around and Money City Maniacs got its hooks into me. Since then I’ve never looked back. I own every everything (including a couple Japanese imports). Plus the VHS video. Plus the DVD. Etc.

My fondness for Sloan (and abiding desire to see them get their due in the States) is boundless. Me and the Mrs. have flown from SFO to Vancouver twice just to see them.

So, yeah, I’m an aging (and unashamedly “lame”) Super-fan. :-)

This is a lame post,...

This is a lame post, but Sloan rules! One of the most underrated bands of the past 15 years or so. Nice to see they’re a geeky, hyper-organized crew!

I’m looking forward to the new album being available on emusic.com.

Whoah, ok, where are you from that you know Sloan? I’m a Cape Bretoner; didn’t realize their reach went so far. So weird to see my worlds collide like this…

The new album is fantastic....

The new album is fantastic. Though I do suggest going for the iTunes version. With the bonus material, it’s longer than what can actually be fit onto a CD, and it’s considerably cheaper too.

Who says you have to...

Who says you have to be Canadian to like Sloan? I’ve lived in the Southwestern US (Colorado and New Mexico) most of my life, now live in England, and I love Sloan. Even if the snobby girl in the record shop in Montreal (only time I have ever been to Canada) told me that it was lame to like them! One of these days I am going to be able to afford to go to Canada to see them live.

And the New Pornographers, but I rather like Daniel Bejar/Destroyer much better.
