"Inside the Net" Meetup; Say hi to Merlin in YYZ

Upcoming.org: “Inside the Net” Taping & Meetup at No Regrets (Tuesday, October 3, 2006)

I’m heading up to Toronto next week for a whirlwind three-day visit — including a podcast session with Amber and Leo for Inside the Net; shooting some segments for Call for Help with Leo; squeezing in a couple other little podcast-y, broadcast-y treats; plus sidling into a serendipitous Long Winters show on Wednesday night. And, yes, I’m leaving before Friday, so, no, I won’t get to see Sloan in their adoptive hometown. C’est la vie, as they presumably say in Quebec.

Anyhow — and I am actually going somewhere with this — the Inside the Net crew invites interested geek Torontonians to come to a live taping and then stick around to hang and meet and talk and whatnot. I’ll be the one with the frequently replenished CANADIAN (mmm…) and the weird hair.

From our Upcoming page:

Amber MacArthur and Leo Laporte’s Inside the Net podcast comes to Toronto’s “No Regrets” on Tuesday, October 3rd, and you’re invited.

For this month’s episode, Amber & Leo geek out with Cali Lewis and Neal Campbell from the popular GeekBrief.TV podcast on the PodShow Podcast Network, plus — in for the week from that country just south of Canada — Merlin Mann from 43 Folders.

Stop by No Regrets around 6:30 to watch the taping, then hang out to grab a beverage, and say “hi” to the hosts and their guests.

Admission is free (as in beer); drinks are on you.

Cool part of all this? In all the preparation emails and various planning bits, I get to type “YYZ” all the time. Beauty, eh?

Hope to see you guys next Tuesday.

Merlin, so the furrowed look...

Merlin, so the furrowed look of consternation is your photo for this segment?

Did Amber pick that photo?

Nice photo Merlin! It makes you...

Nice photo Merlin!

It makes you look like a youthful, slightly less composed Noam Chomsky.

Merlin, I'm sorry I'm not...

Merlin, I’m sorry I’m not going to be able to come out this weekend. I’d love to actually meet you in person. Do me a favour, though: don’t drink Molson Canadian. Its bottled piss. Buy a regional beer like Steamwhistle, Kawartha Lakes Brewery, or better yet: Mill Street. Their coffee porter is just the thing for an Autumn pissup.

If you end up at C’est What somehow in the St Lawrence Market area, they’ve got their own stuff on tap. Look me up, and I’ll buy you a beer.

@Merlin. what did i tell...

@Merlin. what did i tell ya? You’re going to be knighted into the family. Welcome to the Twit/Pod-/Vid-/Net-casting. give Amb a sisterly hug for me. Keep plugging away at that forsaken book ‘cause in another year or so i’m looking to buy a book by an author named Merlin D. Mann.

@Gary. you can attend as teens did before, but they will not serve you alcohol though. A few dragged a parent for precautionary measures and that they couldn’t drive to Toronto from NY and CT.

Enjoy the meet up everyone. i’ll be in pittsburgh wishing i were atleast 400+ miles away. i’ll have to wait for the video.

Merlin I’m listening to Pzizzzzzzzzz as I type, but not concentrating on it. It’s helping me to focus my online activities. yes, i’m scatter-brained, too.

There is a great bistro...

There is a great bistro called Brassier in downtown TO. I spent 6 months working in a chocolate factory in TO and hit every resturnat in town. Nice gig but I felt like an Ooompa Loompa when I finally rolled off the project.

Have fun!

Awesome! So looking forward to...

Awesome! So looking forward to seeing you. I might be late, but I’ll be easy to spot. Just look for the girl with a teensy laptop, a fresh Moleskine… oh, whatever. =)

[...] Anyway, Merlin’s going to...

[…] Anyway, Merlin’s going to be in Toronto next week and there’s an open invite for people to come hang out with Merlin and the Inside the Net crew. I’d love to, but I’ll be on a plane headed for Paris. Here’s the details, for any other Merlin fan boys out there: Amber MacArthur and Leo Laporte’s Inside the Net podcast comes to Toronto’s “No Regrets” on Tuesday, October 3rd, and you’re invited. […]

Nice, but is No Regrets...

Nice, but is No Regrets limited to 19+ guests?

I don't actually know, Gary,...

I don’t actually know, Gary, but it’s a good question and something I was worried about.

Although probably not an expert on the intricacies of Canadian liquor law, Amber seemed to think that since they had food plus tipples, it might be more permissive.

I do hope it’s all-ages.
