Open Thread: the iPhone, Apple TV, Steve's other announcements?
Merlin Mann | Jan 9 2007
Apple - QuickTime - Macworld 2007 Keynote Wow. Everyone here in the MacBreak war room is still perspiring as we let it all sink in. OS X. On your phone. Damn. So what do you guys think about Steve’s announcements? What surprised you? What else do you wish you’d heard? What do you think it will mean to have running OS X on your mobile phone? 56 Comments

Please someone tell me that the iPhone will at least have a Tasks list? From a GTD perspective I need Tasks/To Do’s. As far as the phone running OSX, that seems hopefulin terms of the iPhone eventually ha having a Task/To Do feature but I prefer to do my organizing on my computer and then sync it to my phone. For PC users I’m assuming it would be too much to ask the iPhone to sync with Outlook, but what about having it’s own desktop application like Palm provides? Anyway, I hope 43 things really follows the iPhone news with GTD in mind as I’m very curious about that. »

It was more and better than I imagined. I thought it would be nifty, but not that nifty, that cool, that FUNCTIONAL. I want. I so very want. Thank the heavens that my current phone contract ends in Octember. Whoot! »

It was everything I thought it would be and a shit lot more. The battery life thing sucks though-5 hours when using it as a phone or video player. But they missed putting out iLife and Leopard. They also secretly updated the Airport Express as well on their site. »

I’m ordering one as soon as it’s listed for sale. I’m wondering how long it’ll be before we start seeing phone stuff in XCode (and perhaps a phone emulator in the XCode suite for testing purposes). You gotta figure that with the built-in WiFi, that there will be Skype functionality soon enough. I’m bummed I’ve gotta wait until June. Incidentally, if they get 1% of the global phone market, that will increase Apple’s gross revenues by 25%. »

The phone is triple-wow. I was really afraid that Steve should disappoint us here, as the expectations have been skyhigh. But Apple even topped that. Impressive. Apple TV. Meh. I really can’t understand why it’s so hard for Apple, desig-and-UI-gods-of-the-universe, to put a tuner and a decent EPG in that box. Make us a mediacenter, not a frontend to the iTunes store. And if it’s streaming, and only streaming, where’s the connection to YouTube and Google videos in Apple TV? Or did I miss something? I’m also a bit disappointed that Steve didn’t talk a single word about OS X. It was just “gadgets night”. I guess that will come later. About the multitouch technology, imagine that used for a 30” display?? And integrated into the os? I’ve posted about it at my site. Anyone know if that would be possible at all? »

I picked up the AppleTV, it’s the perfect hub for an entertainment centre… I live in Canada, and I don’t think it takes any shine off at all. There are plenty of videos out there that I’ll love to stream over it to my TV, and that’s not even taking in to account the ability to stream my music to my home system. Of course not having DIVX support was also a little disappointing. Maybe it’s coming. The iPhone was a little disappointing, mostly because they didn’t even mention Canada… I don’t know what that means… are we June as well? 2008? When they can get a carrier? I would think Rogers would be all over this. The price is steep, but if it does everything it says it will, then I’m in… I paid more for my third gen iPod. »

The whole keynote was a disappointment to me. Maybe I’m out of touch but the prospect of a do everything phone and a set-top box that only streams itunes purchases isn’t of much use, especially over here in Australia where the phone isn’t even planned for this year. I wanted at least a sniff of when to expect Leopard, iLife 06 is working fine for me so in no hurry to get that upgraded. Sorry if I’m not excited by the consumer electronics aspect of the keynote, but isn’t there another conference going on where things like this are announced? »

I am in Australia so Steve announced the apple TV that i cant really use except for video podcasts and i would rather just use my display for that. and a Phone i cant have for at last a year (if he counts australia in as part of asia) or maybe never and that was it to me MacWorld usually has something to do with a mac. maybe there will be more announcements soon. i hope »
![]() Why only 4 and 8GB...Submitted by William D. Neumann (not verified) on January 10, 2007 - 6:08am.
Why only 4 and 8GB for a device that is supposed to be for video?! Because it’s to be a sync then watch kind of setup, not a take your entire DVD collection with you setup. Besides, how big are movies that are encoded for the 480x320 screen? You can easily fit a few on there — certainly enough to watch before you have to charge it. and - where is the version of the iPhone with a full HD and no phone features - I want THAT video iPod It’ll be here for Christmas — after all the early jumpers have the phone and the bugs are worked out. That’s my guess. No Xcode for iPhone. No hacker applications for iPhone. Yep. and right now that’ll keep me from getting one in June. Although I fully expect them to have something out for the WWDC. Anyway, I’m a lot less excited about the phone today than I was yesterday, and I’ll likely end up waiting about a year (when my current contract expires). Hopefully it’ll be a 2nd gen with third party apps by then. »

el iPhone esta fregon!!!!! wow, the iPhone is really cool but as always it seems a part of the world is becoming so media-rich while another part is excluded. No iTunes store for Mexico and if Asia is expecting the iPhone for 2008, maybe Mexico will have it around…. mhhhh… Xmas 2009 ??? and of course it will be tied to one mobile phone company and we mexicans will keep on paying some of the highest rates for mobile telephony in the world =( anyway, it is exciting. I do hope that Apple keeps on delivering great computers and I believe (hope) that we’ll see an iPod with the same interface and look of an iPhone, maybe more of a PDA-iPod…. saludos! »

I had been giving some thought to the Treo 750, but I will definitely wait on the iPhone now. What a fantastic device! I recently got an iMac and now I am wondering “why did I wait so long to get one?” Walt Mossberg (Wall Stree Journal) had great things to say about this morning, after just playing with it for a little while, and said it is definitely worth the wait. This has the potential for really impacting the whole cell phone market. I know Apple is just going for the 1%, but would not surprise me to see them get much more than that, despite the cost. When you look at all you get for the $499, it seems like a really good deal to me. »

So the iTV is a smaller Mac Mini with less usability and slightly better digital outputs for a little less money?? No thanks. Mac Mini + Front Row = home theatre sexiness. Why offer something with a smaller harddrive and slightly better version of Front Row for only a little less cash? (let’s face it, that’s all that front-end was… glorified, updated Front Row) I can get an entire, functional system if I just spend a LITTLE more… ya the Mac Mini is slighly larger, but by what… maybe 2, 2.5 times as tall? Whoopie, it’s HUGE… Canadians, fear not - the GSM network is what Rogers uses. We should be able to utilize that sexy iPhone on the Rogers network. There are a couple other networks here that use it as well. The phone is great - certainly not for someone without oodles of cash, though. Too bad we can’t get the same hardware for a bit cheaper. I understand why, I mean look at that thing… but I can’t afford a $699 phone/iPod. Especially if it’s only 8Gb. »

Bottom line for the Emory Household: I would buy two, Day One, if I can buy them unlocked and unbranded. If someone figures out how to unlock them (and I don’t give a shit about Visual Voicemail /yawn) I will get two Cingular lines, get two iPhones, break contract for 150 each, and be happy. Apple nailed it. My only reservation is how they’re going to handle 3rd-party applications and access to the device. There is the potential to have more mobile developers than any other platform overnight if they just let the device take code from external sources. In all honesty I don’t see any reason why they wont allow developers to have a “back door” developer mode on a handset. »

The most impressive thing for me was the corporate name change. No longer Apple Computer as all the Amazon advertisements on your page state, just Apple - like most of us have called them all along. Maybe that’s why they were playing all the Beatles’ music, to rub it in Apple Records face. “Nyah, nyah! We are Apple!” I think that they have definitely changed the mobile phone world. Now I will have to hear more annoying sounds from the urban environment as people assign irritating noises to their incoming calls and incoming chat messages with the Mac ease of customization. I didn’t want another phone - just a widescreen iPod - and maybe PDA. Tepid response from me. »

If you are getting ready to go on a road trip, you’ll need to be able to load a few movies up, some music, some pictures and how much of that 4 - 8 gig is eaten up by the contacts, calendar and other stuff? I don’t think people are going to be syncing dvds on the road. »

![]() On the iPhone--I'm gonna have...Submitted by David M (not verified) on January 10, 2007 - 4:56am.
On the iPhone—I’m gonna have to watch this one. I am a heavy Palm user, and I want to see if it will run regular OSX apps (like, say, OmniFocus?), or if there will have to be mobile editions (like, say, OmniFocus Mobile??), or if it’s a completely closed system (until OmniHack comes out???). : ) The ability to get PIM type stuff on an iPhone would be a Palm-killer for me, especially with how my E2 delightfully resets itself every once in a while. On the Apple TV—I gotta say this…SNORE! Love ya, Jobs, but don’t you remember releasing this back in the OS 7 days, calling it Mac TV, and only marketing it to college students, such that I got one on clearance and used it til it died? (Note, that’s not mine on eBay, but I just wanted you all to see it.) That was back in the days when R&D (as always) rocked, but Marketiung sucked. That’s why only a few of us remember it, but Steve, it’s already been done…BY YOU! Sigh, lack of historical memory is the soul of our culture… »

I think we just saw Leopard. That sweet scrolling, colors, buttons, etc. are probably all the UI for Leopard. I bet that Leopard, iLife ‘07, iWork ‘07, and all sorts of new things will be released between now and when the iPhone is shipping. »

All the comments so far deal about what the iphone and appletv mean today in today’s world/marketplace. Far more interesting to me: how did apple positioned itself for the upcoming battle in the global startrek-like technology market? Kicking everything else’s butt by doing everything right. »

I was initially very excited about the phone. I’m a PC guy, I have no macs, but two iPods. The things that will (most likely) keep me from buying the phone are: Cingular Edge Price (with contract) and available sizes (4 and 8 gig - my 60 gig only has 11 gig left) I’m hoping some of these will change, my Sprint contract is up for renewal in March and I need a new phone. A 30 (or larger) gig model for the lower price point, faster connectivity would have me switching to Cingular. Fred »
![]() Guys, the iPhone is lovely...Submitted by Simon Wilson (not verified) on January 9, 2007 - 9:38pm.
Guys, the iPhone is lovely I even started believing the reality distortion field but then I pulled out my phone (Windows Smartphone) to make a call and I just pushed a couple of buttons to locate my contact and dialed. Hold On - where’s the keyboard! You have to naviagte from the home page to the phone app or contact to begin to look for what you want. Take a look at the phone market and you will see that they tried using touch screen phones and now all the smartphones are moving back to having keyboard because IT is faster for phone and SMS. Apple really should have had no dilemma over the name this is actually an iPodPhone. Now if they just accepted that and built this as a full screen 6g iPod it would of been available now and it would sell like hotcakes but Steve worries about Nokia, LG, et al taking over the music player market and thus felt Apple had to play in this market to protect their music player market share. But let’s just remember it is an iPodPhone not an iPhone »
![]() Looks like a lovely phone....Submitted by Stefan Seiz (not verified) on January 9, 2007 - 11:36pm.
Looks like a lovely phone. Do i need one? No, not until affordable data-plans are available in europe (including roaming). What dissapoints me a bit is, that i slowly see apple shift into geting a toy-manufacturer. I mean - iPods and Phones and Apple-TV - all nice, but i run my business on Apple Computers and Software and it’s been a perfect fit so far. Thus, at the biggest Mac Tradshow on Earth, i was expecting news in a sector which matters most to me: Apple Computers and Software. I’d have loved to see a 12” MacBook Pro for instance. I sure hope to see some Apple Pressreleases in the next weeks or otherwise might start to believe they forgot their core customers and are just out for the quick buck. »
![]() A few things. First, recall...Submitted by Georce Smiley (not verified) on January 9, 2007 - 9:36pm.
A few things. First, recall that the RAZR was rather expensive at initial release as well. It is now the best selling cell phone ever. So was the iPod (remember the original /. capsule review). So was, for that matter, the original Walkman. It was at least $400 in 2007 dollars. Why? Fashion, not value, dominates. And iPhone is teh sexy. You say you need to be an early adopter yet are unwilling to pay? Call the goddam waaahmbulance. Second, this is not going to be an easy device to produce, and Apple has got to be watching the PS3 delivery debacle with a wary eye. Much better is to get it into the hands of the trendsetting early adopters with high margins and in quantities they are reasonably sure they can deliver. If they make their stated target they’re still talking about more than half a billion in sales in the first year. Third, this is a huge launch for Apple. They did not want to dilute press coverage by talking about five products - especially incremental ones like the subcompact notebook that I’ve had the Jones for for so long (looks like it’s time to put a bigger hard drive in the venerable & inscrutable 12” G4). But the LAST thing Jobs wanted was press coverage of a friggin’ VAIO clone in place of his beautiful baby iPhone. »

Here are some questions that occurred to me: -Why is Apple mocking Microsoft for achieving 2% of the mp3 player market when it is only targeting for 1% of the handset market? Admittedly, the phone market is much larger than the mp3 player market. Is it just Microsoft’s (or the press/blogosphere’s) characterization of the Zune as an ‘iPod killer’? -What enhancements needed to made to Leopard in order to support iPhone functionality? Do you think it’s running Aqua or a new graphical layer? »

I have to say, iPhone is emblematic of what’s right about Apple. iPhone is (okay, seems) wildly functional, completely expandable, and… well, the thing just works — easily, quickly, and the same way, no matter what you’re doing with it. Watching Jobs demo iPhone was like watching a movie written by Charlie Kauffman; every little detail seemed simultaneously surprising and inevitable. »
