Link gratitude: Where I find my best stuff
Merlin Mann | Jun 18 2007
I always try to credit the source for stuff that I link to when I’ve learned about it from other sites. In addition to helping my readers connect with voices they may not have heard before, I believe it’s just the classy thing to do. (I’m looking at you, “A Listers” — a lot of you have started dropping vias for everyone but your highest-profile buddies: tacky, tacky). Anyway, I admit that I’m not 100% either, but in the interest of trying to make good, here are a few of the sites that I find myself reading and linking to a lot. Thanks to their authors and contributors for sending me (and you) to so many interesting places.
I’m sure I’ve forgotten someone and will be back to add more folks the minute I hit “Submit,” so please bear with me. But, what do you think? Did I miss anyone? Who do I glean links from all the time? Got a great resource I might be missing? (No self-links for this one, please) 20 Comments

I second the MeFi shoutout. Also to finding bookmark lists of those who share your unique POV. I am usually alerted to good stuff via Waxy.org, and lots of timely links through my twitter peeps. »

We Make Money Not Art is a great source of stories about creative and surprising uses for technology. One of my first posts on our company blog was inspired by their report on a system that creates a visual map of someone’s emotions as they walk through a neighborhood. http://www.we-make-money-not-art.com/ »

Unclutterer has been taken a chunk of my attention lately. It’s a great way to minimize “stuff” and put it into perspective. The writing is pithy. Certainly a daily read. »

Signal vs Noise by 37Signals always has interesting content that gives me great ideas, makes me laugh and think (HawkWings is one of my favorites and is how I found 43Folders). »

My biggest time drain has been Zen Habits. I just discovered that site, but they have tons of useful articles. The goal: a useful article, every day. And it meets the goal. Wow. »

For Mac related stuff, I prefer http://www.macsurfer.com/ It’s like having an RSS feed of all Mac related sites. It provides a short summary of today’s posts from a wide range of Mac sites. I no longer need to scan through all the Mac sites when I can just look here. »

No sense calling attention to the Macalope standing over there. »

I think I can safely speak for the rest of the TUAW gang when I say that 43 Folders is near the top of my RSS pile (or is it a stack now?). Keep up the good work! The only question is when will an episode of MacBreak Weekly feature a TUAW blogger? ;) »

Macrumors.com? Probably covers much the same ground as TUAW, but a good roundup of current gossip with reasonable editorial restraint - they’re good at putting caveats on unconfirmed rumors, for example. »

AskMeFi never ceases to amaze me. So many smart people answering stuff for free makes for an awesome community. If it wasn’t for all the interminable “My boyfriend does/doesn’t do X. Should I dump him/marry him?” questions, it would be fantastic. »

I’ll just echo the above sentiments of my esteemed fellow blogger, Mr. McNulty, in saying that the MacUser team is a fan of 43 Folders and the rest of the burgeoning Merlin Mann Empire (that’s right, I said burgeoning—want to make something of it?). Thanks for the link; hope to have you back on the MacUser Podcast in the not-too-distant future. »

Hey Merlin — I will happily echo Scott and Dan’s thanks with my own: we’re honored to have you among TUAW’s readership and we’ll try to live up to your endorsement. [No post quotas!] As for my own reading habits, outside of Engadget and Download Squad, I swing between Ars Technica’s Infinite Loop feed and Lifehacker for surprising and informative articles. For true Mac dirt, you have to go to the top: Fake Steve. http://arstechnica.com/infiniteloop http://lifehacker.com http://fakesteve.blogspot.com »

Merlin, I’d be bereft without Daniel Eran Dilger’s roughlydrafted.com and his singular tech snidery which makes me wish I knew as much about computing history as he does, so that I could write the damn thing. While I’m here, I should thank you for the links to genuine resources you’ve hipped me to, such as maximumfun.org and jonathancoulton.com. You are all my magazine. But you, sir, are a gentleman. »
