if you’re really into keyboard access on the mac, i would highly recommend the Launch Bar application:

it lets you quickly open applications, folders, files, and more with a simple keyboard shortcut and file name abbreviations. i’ll admit it doesn’t sound particularly great, but once you try it, you’ll be hooked.
