I keep a work diary in one big giant text file. I keep my GTD info in four big ass lists, plus some smaller project specific lists.

My work diary is five years running, and has at least an entry every week, if not daily. I use emacs outline mode to hide large portions of the file, and to navigate around. Works for my much smaller GTD lists too.
