I use something that is...

I use something that is slightly similiar when I’m faced with a task that I keep putting off. For example if I’ve been dreading sorting through all the paperwork on my desk, I’ll set a timer for 15 minutes and promise myself to work on the task for that period of time. When the timer goes off I can stop. Sometimes once I get into it I’ll work past the time, but just setting a small finite goal makes it easier to get started.
