not having to remember to sync an iphone

Having just switched to an iPhone, the huge thing that’s not there any more is wireless syncing.

When I wake up at 4am having remembered I need to do something today, I just put it in my phone and go back to sleep; and trust the syncing to be reminded at the appropriate time.

Previously I had ical set to run a applescript task around he time I wake up each morning to sync my phone over bluetooth (it runs the next time my mac wakes from sleep), so everything would find out what I needed to do after the 4am panic.

Now, I have to remember to dock my iphone for syncing to work, and me remembering anything is never a good start. The interim hack of a reminder to dock my iphone is not really, well, apple-like.

Anyone got any ideas for something that sucks less?

Re: not having to remember to sync an iphone

I have a similar issue of remembering to sync my Nokia E61 before I leave my home office. Aside from an AppleScript running every X minutes (which you’ve done before), this may be something to do the old fahsioned way… Get into the habit of docking the iPhone each morning. Put a Post-It Note on your bathroom mirror or the front door.

I’ve found there is more power in creating a new, and constructive, habit than relying on yet another system to remind me.

hi Eric, thanks for your

hi Eric,

thanks for your ideas.

For your situation, there is a little program available which watches your ical and address book for changes, and then kicks off an ical sync a (configurable) few minutes later. That may cleanly solve your problem.

a post it note might work. I’ll give it a go. cheers

.mac should do this for us

I want my .mac membership to enable wireless calendar and address book updating, either over wi-fi or Edge as available. Let me set a frequency to check for updates and then that’s that. My wife or secretary can change my iCal and … voila… it shows up on my iPhone.

My calendars and contacts are on my computer and on .mac. Wouldn’t this be the kind of feature that would not only add value to the iPhone, but also make .mac a killer, invaluable service.

dude, i worte about that once!

I actually have a lot of thoughts on how Apple could make .Mac more viable of a solution by integrating it tightly with mobile devices.
