Oh, man. How did I forget this? Next week, MacBreak Weekly's special guest will be Pat Wilson, the drummer from Weezer and The Rentals and the multi-instrumental leader of That Special Goodness. In the latest episode of MacBreak Minute (subscribe), I talked about a Safari plug-in I like a lot called Saft.

Although my short demo only covers bookmarking a set of tabs, Saft does way more. To quote the lovely and talented Jon Hicks:

Saft is quite simply the vital extension for Safari. Its started life as a way of getting full screen/kiosk mode, but has grown to include many other features as well. Hao Li, the developer, is regularly adding new features, and updates are always available soon after a main Safari update.

Linspire has made a deal with Microsoft to share numerous technologies.

Wow. I love this practical outline of stuff Mike Mahon does to get things done. It's primarily a list of useful life-hacky stuff that helps him keep it together, but it also repeatedly brings the funny:

I tried a myriad of techniques and tips. Every article or suggestion was attempted and tested for incorporation into my POS (my own acronym for my Personal Organization System). I began to become bureaucratic and a purist about the most miniscule action items, checking lists and updating statuses. Then one day after writing down that I need to SSSBTFGD (Shit Shower Shave Brush Teeth Floss Get Dressed) I realized it had gone too far and decided to step back and whack the stupid out of my system.

I'm so going to install a "Big Don’t Forget This Stuff Box" right now.

Of my many sins in this mortal coil, the one I might regret most is helping cause one book called "Getting Things Done" to become synonymous with everything from paper to kitchen timers to -- well -- having a job, I guess.

A lot of what Mike's doing here is only orthogonally related to David Allen's actual book (which is so totally okay with me), but it does mostly share reverence for one of the most important lessons of GTD: until you figure out your relationship to all the "stuff" in your life, you're just spinning your wheels. Making hard decisions about your "POS" and whacking the stupid out of it is also just huge. It's the point when you stop thinking about riding a bike and just start pedaling.

Great work, Mike -- and, seriously, congrats to Gina and the Lifehacker crew on their continuing hot streak. It's been really swell and useful the last few weeks in particular.

Open Thread: How are you using tabs?

I live in browser tabs. Whether I'm in Safari or Firefox, I'm constantly sending links to a new tab (CMD-click in either app). It's something that most geeks take for granted but--I can tell you, I've seen the browser stats--there's still a lot of folks out there living in one Window. (*observes solemn moment of silence*)

But, by far, my biggest gains come from the numerous tabbed bookmark sets that I keep in my favorites bar. These include:

del.icio.us (home page, my page, my inbox, new and hot, daily mashup, live marks)
MetaFilter (the blue, the grey, the green, my peeps)
Fun break (LiveJournal Friends, Flickr contacts' pix, Flickr ego surfing, El-Dubs board, Wrens board)

I've also got tab sets for finances, 43f stats, news sites, friends' blogs, and even a set of about 10 pages that comprise the theme templates I use most in WordPress (makes for super fast editing sessions).

So. My question to you is: How are you using tabs and tab sets? Anybody doing sexy fu with Saft? Safari Stand? Tabbrowser Preferences?

Icons for Safari favorites

I’m a big fan of the Bookmarks Bar in Safari, and I try to keep mine tidy, up to date, and optimized for whatever projects I’m working on at the time.

You probably already know to rename and shorten the buttons to conserve space, but, by pulling up the “Show Special Characters” menu, you can also drop in Symbols and Zapf Dingbats to use like little icons.

If there’s an image that suits a given bookmark or folder, you can use just that single character and free up precious screen real estate for even more bookmarks. Plus it looks kind of cool.
