MacBreak 74: Hot Lips and Hawkeye

MacBreak Weekly 74: Hot Lips and Hawkeye

Hosts: Leo Laporte, Merlin Mann, Andy Ihnatko, and Rich Siegel

A look back at Macworld, Office spreads out, MacHeist, .Mac future bright and cloudy, certain gestures and more.

Here’s a direct MP3 download of MBW 74.

I think this might be one of my favorite episodes of MacBreak Weekly. Say what you will about the podcast medium, it’s amazing to be able to pull an articulate person like Rich Siegel into your conversation midway — (~00:38:15) — just via IM and a phone number. Very cool.

So. That said. I really want the promoters and developer-fans of MacHeist to have their opportunity to respond to what Rich (and we) had to say. Clearly we all think a lot of the Mac indie community, so it’d be valuable to continue the conversation in a way that’s fair and civil for everybody.

Directions on how to get your voice heard appear around (~00:57:11) of this episode.

update 2008-01-25 08:21:01

MBW: New iMacs; iLife & iWork '08; .Mac; Anti-picks; and Merlin's dirty little secret

MacBreak Weekly 52: Ten Cents A Dance

Hosts: Leo Laporte, Merlin Mann, Scott Bourne, Andy Ihnatko, and Alex Lindsay

We take a look at Apple’s new iMacs, and iLife and iWork 08…

Here’s a direct MP3 download of MBW 52.

Of course, when I chose iCal as my anti-pick, I said it with love. Much love.

iCal and me are like family. Except in this case, I’m the Dad and iCal is the at-risk kid whose grades keep dropping and who always forgets to take the trash to the curb. Damned kid.

Tough love? You bet. But, still: love.

Also, in unrelated news, I quietly outed myself as a new iPhone owner. So there you go. My dirty little secret, revealed.

Facebook has recently allowed for applications which enticed Leo.

Merlin & Leo: Gentle introduction to GTD

The Tech Guy Labs - Leo Laporte, “The Tech Guy” [2007-03-31]

On last Saturday’s Tech Guy radio show, Leo Laporte and I talked about some of the basics of David Allen’s Getting Things Done system. For most regular visitors to 43 Folders, this is going to be very introductory stuff, but I think it may be useful to folks who are getting started or are just curious about what “GTD” even means.

My segment appears from about 00:59:30 to about 1:08:45. Here’s a link to an MP3 of the show, plus a few of the items that were mentioned in the segment:

Tech Guy Labs: 64k MP3 of the 3/31 show

MacBreak Weekly taping tonight at 21st Amendment

Upcoming.org: MacBreak Weekly Live @ 21st Amendment at 21st Amendment (Tuesday, January 9, 2007)

Directions to 21A, from Moscone Center

Just a reminder that tonight’s live taping of MacBreak Weekly takes place at 21st Amendment starting at 6pm. If you’re planning to come to the taping, my advice is to get there early, because we’re anticipating a capacity audience (that’s a big reason everyone agreed it was better not to do this event at the Apple Store on Steve Day).

Leo, Alex, Scott, and I will be discussing today’s announcements and may even have some guests.

A propos of nothing, I will also take this opportunity to remind Mr. Bourne of his (often repeated) promise to buy everyone on MBW an iPhone on the day that they come out. Just saying.

If you come out tonight or see me on the Macworld show floor with MacBreak today, please say hi and introduce yourself.

As promised, here’s the latest video podcast episode of MacBreak, in which Leo and I have a look at Path Finder, an application by Cocoatech that (in my opinion) handsomely compensates for many of the deficits in the current OS X Finder. It also has a ton of cool features, preferences, and geegaws that most any Mac nerd will love.

New to me in this episode: according to Leo, Woz (cough) likes Path Finder, too. Cool!

Finally, here’s some earlier coverage of Path Finder on 43f.

MacBreak: Minimize distractions on your Mac

MacBreak 33: The Distracted Mac (Direct MOV Download)

Although it covers a lot of the same ground as a previous MacBreak we did on the subject, I think Leo and my segment on un-distract-ifying your Mac turned out pretty good (my atrocious hairstyle at shoot time notwithstanding). Download 10:28 MOV file now…

Here’s the apps and tricks that we covered, with links:

Hide Others - In the front app, select “
[Application name menu] > Hide Others
”

Turn [Dock] Hiding On - In the Dock,
CTRL-Click
the Dock’s vertical separator bar, and select “
Turn Hiding On
”

Backdrop - Create a black background that still lets you easily interact with Desktop contents

MenuShade - Alter the brightness of your Menu — or totally black it out, like I do

Spirited Away — Hides non-active applications after the interval of your choice (thanks for the legacy download link, Don)

Path Finder - Totally tricked out Finder on steroids that I love love love; where I made the Desktop black and hid all mounted drives, folders, etc. (doable in the regular Finder, too)

Hazel - Automagically clean up the contents of folders and the Desktop (e.g., “move old MP3s here” or “archive files older than a week” etc.)

Textmate - My favorite text editor. Which I apparently love to plug for no particular reason.

Edit 2006-12-21 16:51:22: Check after the cut for reader suggestions from comments for this post…

Witch - “Witch lets you access all of your windows by pressing a shortcut and choosing from a clearly arranged list of window titles…”

Desktopple - “With Desktopple, you can quickly and easily hide all of your Desktop clutter.”

LiteSwitch X - Merlin’s fave app switcher; handy also for quitting, hiding, or restarting apps without changing focus

[unsanity] WindowShade X - Hack control of your Finder Windows

Menufela - “Menufela is a haxie that lets you hide away the menubar and/or get rid of the spotlight menu item.”

Doodim - “Doodim permits one to dim the background of the foremost application thereby enhancing its visibility.”

ianhenderson.org - megazoomer - “Megazoomer makes windows full-screen. “
