MBW 59 Pick by Merlin: 50mm vs. 35mm lens?

Hi forum!

At the MacBreak Weekly 59 Podcast, Merlin recommended a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens as pick of the week. He said he liked it not only because it is a very fast lens, but also because it resembles the "zoom factor" of the human view.

Now this might be true for an analog SLR, but for most reasonably priced DSLRs you have to multiply the zoom factor by 1.6, so you end up with a "de facto" 80mm lens.

Now my questions for you, dear forum:

  1. Can you use a "de facto" 80mm lens inside for e.g. family events with results that look like a human would see it? Or approximately?

  2. What's the bigger trade-off: Having a 50mm f/1.4 which is a "de facto" 80mm but very fast, or having a 35mm f/2.0 which is a "de facto" 56mm but not as fast. Over here in Old Europe the former is around $560, the latter around $430.

Thanks for your advice!

Andreas
