Tips on commuting by bike

Google Groups : 43 Folders [Bicycle Commuting to Work]

Excellent thread over on the Google Group about using a bike to commute to work. Some tips that have emerged so far:

  • get the right equipment: helmet, gloves, a rack or panniers, and a good messenger bag that’s durable and water-resistant
  • keep a voice recorder handy to capture ideas on the road
  • if you have a hybrid commute, use the non-bike time to relax, read, or go over your plans for the day
  • in the event of light rain, keep a rain shell crumpled up in an empty water bottle
  • if you don’t have shower access at work, use baby wipes and a gym towel
  • leave your work shoes at the office; they’re too heavy and bulky to tote back and forth
  • rotate your underwear: bring fresh to wear today, and use yesterday’s to ride home (hey, nobody said this would be pretty)

^^^ Awesome. "I've never had a fatal accident whilst wearing mine." Come to think of it, I've never had a fatal accident whilst wearing my seatbelt either... hmm... makes you think

*** Warning - Animal lovers/tree huggers skip this section *** I used to have to ride through a heavily wooded section of road out in the country, and there were plenty of wild dogs in the area. I invested in a .22 pistol and carried it with me whenever I rode through that area. Fortunately, I never had to actually shoot anything, but the loud noise scared off a particularly menacing-looking dog in my path one day. The trick is to have something that's powerful enough to kill in one or two shots -- inhumane, maybe, but it's better their life than yours. *** End violence ***

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless
