”What’s 43 Folders?”
43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work.

Workflow for small businesses

Just curious what tools you use in your companies in regards to workflow be it procedures, software, outsourcing options, etc. The reason I ask is I'm not yet to the point I can hire other people (except for some "micro-employees") but I'm getting to the point things are getting busier and tasks need to be managed better so we are not reinventing the wheel at the start of each new project. if software solutions are mentioned I need to know about things that run on both Windows and OSX as I use both in my business.

Tools for workflow

We have bureaucrats whose job is to write formal procedures documents that everyone can ignore ;)

What I prefer to do is draw the procedure using mind maps or flow charts, initially on a whiteboard or a big piece of paper. Then transfer to a computer, I use MindManager on Windows (I don't know about multi-platform options). The advantage of this is that the process can be shown in outline view and then expanded to the detail necessary so experienced staff who know how to do a task need only look at top level detail but newer staff can drill down to the details.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
