Additional emails addresses in one Mail.app account

JustinFrench.com: Email Aliases in Apple Mail

Poor Justin French doesn’t know it yet, but his site’s officially my new interweb crush. Great stuff on his site, including this unbelievably useful (and astoundingly non-obvious) tip for associating multiple email addresses with a given Mail.app account.

What they don’t tell you is that you can associate multiple email address’ with each mailbox/account by separating them with a comma. This is great news for someone who has multiple email address’ all forwarded to one mail box (joe@, joe.smith@, admin@, etc).

As Justin points out, the beauty part is that when you hit REPLY to email sent to you at one of these addresses, Mail.app is smart enough to automatically set the FROM: correctly. N.B.: this is working swell for me even when adding addresses that are just being forwarded to this account (merlin@foo.com; lorem@example.com, etc.).

Excellent stuff and a great tip for what had been a vexing problem for me.

That might be the best...

That might be the best tip ever.

I used to have Mail set up with a bogus POP3 account (set to not check for mail). This led to certain oddities (like extra mail folders, and occasional complaints when I hit “check all accounts”). This is a far, far, simpler way to support mail aliasing.

NICE, but watch out!

  1. If you delete a mail account, all emails in the associated inbox AND sent folders will also be deleted. Drag them elsewhere to save them.

  2. the account “name” (as opposed to the email address) will be the SAME for all email addresses listed as the tip outlines. Currently, it appears there is no way to assign a unique “from” field to these “separate” accounts.

Thanks Justin!

Rob
