Want to keep surfing? Pay the Webolodeon

Oblomovka [Webolodeon Greasemonkey Script]

As mentioned in our latest column for Make, Danny presents herewith his Webolodeon, a Greasemonkey script that bugs you every few minutes to ask whether you should really still be surfing the web.

Once installed, you will be pestered every 5 minutes to make a case for your further web browsing. If your work is done, just cancel the dialog box and quit the app; if you’re not finished (and you really need to keep zipping around the Interweb a bit longer), insert a virtual nickel by typing a summary of what you’re working on….

The idea, of course, is not to make you insane and interrupt your real work, but to ensure that you’re always aware of the task that brought you where you are—that you not allow a legitimate work search to turn into a 4-hour wikipedia party.

Update 2005-06-03 06:45:31

I should have said—Danny’s script requires the latest (0.3.3) version of Greasemonkey. Click to install.

Sorry for any confusion, B. Adam, et al.

I just wait for a helpful article to pop up in my RSS feeds from one of the productivity gurus I subscribe to, reminding me that I really should be doing something more useful.

That reminds me. I should be sleeping.

Brilliant. One of the best quotes I’ve heard that drives it home…

I love it! Just need a version for Safari now. And it would be really useful if the responses were logged so that you could look back and see exactly where all those hours went… The script is easy to read but since I’ve never done any java script I think editing it myself would leave me in google / interweb land for far too long ;)

Brilliant. Really useful for those of us who tend to do web research and get off on tangents.

Ah, yes. I love stuff like this—The Webolodeon Greasemokey Script. It’s a script that forces you, kind of, to be productive with your surfing or get the heck off the ‘puter. Once installed, you will be pestered every 5 minutes…
