Open Thread: What's your favorite minimalist wallet?

Like most 43F articles on economical carriage and stowage, the Jimi post attracted a lot of interest. Makes me think it’s time for an open thread: What’s your favorite minimalist wallet? Jimi? Slimmy? Moneyclip? Coin purse? Goin’ commando? Spill in comments (and feel free to link to canonical product pages or price compar-i-nators like Froogle).

My own winner for minimalism? Starting before a trip to New York in the late 80s, I started wrapping my driver’s license, ATM card, and a bill or two in a couple of my Goody pony tail holders (shut up). I think that was my wallet for at least the next two years — until I got my first real job and decided to go cowhide again. Still, it remains one of my favorites.

My wife got me a nice, slim leather wallet (by Jack Spade, I believe.) A simple, attractive billfold. I like the looks of it so am motivitated to ruthlessly purge it at the first sign of bulge, for aesthetic reasons. I’m going to check out a Jimi, however, for travel, sports, etc— occasions where you don’t need all of your stuff with you.

Tiny Meat (www.tinymeat.com) has great, thin platicky/vinyl wallets - holds a little more than the hard plastic “Jimi”, but a lot less than a traditional wallet. It holds up well too - I’ve had mine since December, and its still in great condition.

I use a combination of a metal card holder/money clip, it’s very slim and hold about 4 cards, (Bank Card, Credit Card, Corp AMEX, and ID in my case). Fit’s in my front pocket, so no potential for back pain from a bulging wallet.

I have been a front...

I have been a front pocket wallet user ever since my dad, and come to think of it his dad, taught me this as the “proper way” to carry ones money. Of course dear old Dad has a Constanza wallet in his right front trouser pocket, but that’s another issue.

I am a “Slim Slimmy” man now, though I have gone through a few other variations on the theme. I live in Norway, where you can do nearly everything either electronically or via your bankcard (debit visa) and the bankcard is considered official indentification while the driver’s license is not. Consequently, I just carry three cards most days: debit visa, driver’s license, and a US visa or AMEX. I don’t bother putting bills into the wallet, I just put a few hundred kroner (30usd or so) into my pocket with it. If I need to carry coins or get change during the day, that goes into my other front pocket. Keys, phone, PDA, transit pass: into my jacket pockets, computer bag, briefcase, or occasionally my “European Carryall” (it’s not a purse, dammit!).

I rarely put anything into my back pockets other than a guitar pick or sometimes my office badge when I go to the cantina.

I go with the money...

I go with the money clip with card holder attached, although it is getting bulky now. I need a new solution soon, but when my money clip is full will a new solution come to fruit. I just couldn’t stand the wallet anymore, the fat thing on my ass making me sit sideways causing back problems. Now my problem with the money clip that I have is that it looks like I am carrying a large wallet in my front pocket…maybe if I stopped wearing leather pants this wouldn’t be an issue, I mean I switched to clip from wallet when I started wearing leather ass chaps so….(ok that last part was a joke.)

I threw the wallet out...

I threw the wallet out a good ten years back. I had always been a minimalist, and for a long time had a silky black ripstop number that added practically nothing in terms of thickness, but then that wore out and I could not find a suitable alternative.

Eventually I realized that I could get away with one credit card / debit card, my ID a few business cards and a luck $2 bill folded small between the lot. I fold my large bills around this, and hold everything together with a large stainless steel butterfly clip. Butterfly clips are great, they last for ever, look good, are easy to slip over my bills and add practically no thickness to my minimal bill fold. One added advantage is that when I go to Europe my wallet system still works (Euro bills are way larger than US bills). Small bills and change sit in my front pocket.

All this talk of minimalist...

All this talk of minimalist wallets inspired me to move my IDs, a couple of credit cards, some business cards, and some bills into the pockets of my Levenger Pocket Briefcase, which I carry everywhere anyway (GTD notes). Like a previous post, this and my Blackberry gives me everything I need!

I might go with the International Pocket Briefcase if this continues to work out well.

I’d love to hear about wallet-type strategies for girls going dancing/clubbing. Where do you put your minimum stuff without carrying a purse? (eg. 2 cards and 2 bills)

A tiny pocket you could stick to the inside of whatever outfit you’re wearing would be ideal…

Five years ago, I bought...

Five years ago, I bought a bag of rubber bands for $0.99 and they have been my wallet ever since. A few times a year, the band breaks and I grab another from the bag. Besides being economical, it adds practically zero bulk to my pocket, and it’s quick to access. Cash tends to get a tad crumpled, but it’s worth it.

I use a Fossil ID...

I use a Fossil ID bifold money clip. Unlike the Jimi, it holds more than three bills, so I don’t have to worry about putting away my change when I make a purchase. Plus at the moment it’s holding 10 credit/ATM/store type cards, and three ID cards. I seriously doubt I’d feel something like a Jimi any less in my front pocket, and this is for more versatile.

My minimalist wallet, isn’t really small, but combines my hipsterpda and my wallet in the smallest package I’ve seen yet. I bought a Levenger International Pocket Briefcase, and it holds my required cards, a pen, and my hipsterPDA cards. Perfect.

I use the All-Ett (http://www.all-ett.com/)...

I use the All-Ett (http://www.all-ett.com/) which bills itself as the world’s thinnest wallet. It’s made of nylon sailcloth. It feels wierd, and looks ugly, but it is so much thinner than anything else I’ve ever used that it’s worth it. I used to take out my wallet when I sat down, which led to difficulty several times. Now, I hardly even know the wallet’s there. (I know, I sound like a commercial, or a raving fanboy).

The thin material, and the four non-overlapping pockets, and the lack of other junk (like windows for licenses, etc) really allow me to carry all the stuff I need, but still stay slim…

I’m still laughing about the pony-tail wallet, but anyway. My favorite for a long time was a (new) old-school metal cigarette case. It held a few cards and some cash perfectly, and looked really cool. I used it for years, until one of the corners got kind of scraggly, and it started poking me in the ass. Bummer!

if you want to splurge, this (i know it shows an agenda with it… he has his sans agenda) is the best minimalist wallet i’ve gotten for my man. he’s abuseive with his stuff. he had a coach card carrier and a money clip and he disintegrated both. hopefully, the lv tagia will stand the beating.

I've got what I think...

I’ve got what I think is the best wallet on the planet. No more George Costanza-like bulge. But the best part is the construction—the wallet is made of sail cloth, so it’s virtually indestructible, but also allows the wallet to breathe.

I keep a money clip for cash and I keep all my cards in my fancy checkbook/cardholder.

I keep the checkbook in my computer bag/jacket pocket and it’s never in the way but always easy to access. When I absolutly need to travel light I just take my ID and ATM card and stick them in the money clip.

http://www.all-ett.com/. I got the ALL-ETT® Billfold wallet last summer as a gift, and it truly is as thick loaded as my previous leather wallet is empty. It is slightly taller (longer) than a typical wallet with the advantage that there are fewer overlapping cards. It is also made out of a very thin nylon material. Like all wallets I’ve used for years, I carry this in my front pocket for comfort.

I gotta go with AJP's...

I gotta go with AJP’s approach. Small it ain’t but it is as minimal as I feel I can get away with. (minimalism is a relative thing) I’ve had my Levenger International Pocket Briefcase for a year now and I love it. I tend to collect receipts and notes for later input into Outlook or Quicken. This fits the bill. I have been jonesing for a Jimi since I saw one on flickr a few months back. I usually keep my wallet in my front pants pocket anyway, but if I tried keeping this one in my back pocket I’m pretty sure it would involve a trip to the chiropractor.

There is definitely a disadvantage...

There is definitely a disadvantage to being a woman trying to carry the fewest possible items. Not to mention, my OCD hand washing requires equal hand lotioning, so carrying a hand moisturizer is a must. Then we’ve got to look pretty, so add makeup to the list. In the past, it has been a losing battle. I once carried a purse that made me look like the mother of four kids (I have none).

I am doing better. The decision to wear less makeup helped tremendously. Then, I’ve also addressed my discomfort with leaving certain items at home - those things we could possibly, MAYBE need while we’re away but, in reality, have never ended up needing.

Similar to your ponytail holder, I was using a small binder clip, to hold a few bills around a few cards. After fumbling with the clip a few too many times in the grocery check-out, I opted for a coin purse the dimensions of a credit card, that nestles inside my “purse” (which is essentially a small makeup bag - even smaller than a clutch - that holds tiny versions of lip gloss, hand lotion, a nail file and my coin purse with a few bills and four cards). It is barely larger than my hand, can accommodate my cell phone or keys when I walk into a store, and easily slips into my larger workbag during the week (so I don’t have to carry my bag AND a purse, as I’m guessing many women do).

A bike shop in nearby Omaha, NE carries the jimi wallet, and I intend to purchase one to use in place of my coin purse. I believe it would be more likely to fit in a pocket by itself, when I want to carry the least possible items for activities such as clubbing and dancing.

Thank you for all the tips you share. They have been tremendously helpful to me, especially the email topics.

My advice is toss the wallet, but keep the ID holder!

I use the leather ID holder that came with my husband’s last wallet. It has a clear pocket for the ID, where I keep my drivers license. The other pocket holds two credit cards (used to be just one, I need to clean it out!). I keep cash outside of the pockets, just folded in the center. I also keep a spare bill (when I have one) folded up between the credit cards.

That’s it!

I use a little red binder clip to hold my cards (DL, CC, debit, transit pass, etc) and if I have cash I usually fold the bills around the cards. It works pretty well, except the binder clip is wearing down the lamination on my DL.

I have this cool little bungie cord card case from Umbra. Picked it up in a local boutique store but have seen them many more places (Including a store in the MSP Airport). It is made of hard thick metal so it is virtually indestructable and is imposible to overfill.

I love my Slimmy. It has 3 small pockets that I use for cash, cards and reciepts. I still have to be careful about not accumulating cards. I carry a palm with me all the time so I take pictures of cards I use rarely (library, frequent Subway eating, etc). I use the picture to show someone the number that they key in. Occassional hassle but lets me get rid of 6 or 7 cards.
