”What’s 43 Folders?”
43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention you need to create your best work. »

43f Links for 2008-06-01

And, in passing, a personal note: many thanks to you for your patience while I took some time to see to other projects; my more normal (which is to say, irregular, by most “pro blog” standards) habit of posting to 43f when I have something to share or say restarts now. I’m grateful for your hanging with me.

Links to your other work

You might consider laying some link love on yourself between posts here, so that we’ll follow you to YLNT or those other projects. You’ve got a soapbox. Use it well.

Worth it

If less 43f posts is the price we have to pay for YLNT, I would pay it 100 times over. I just love YLNT. I didn’t expect to, but I do. Thank you.

In Total Agreement

If the enjoyment I get when listening to YLNT is felt by anyone else besides me and the two previous commenters, It is so totally worth it. (I'm sure Scott, Sandwich and you are having a great time too.) I♥ 43F and it has helped me tremendously in my professional and personal lives, but if it takes a break from this to find a cure for Sacks-Minelli disease then that is what it takes.

Thanks.

Wow, thanks you guys. That was an unexpected vote of confidence. Very cool.

Yeah, (the amazingly NSFW) You Look Nice Today is a newish podcast I do with @lonelysandwich and @scottsimpson, and it’s definitely one of the projects in question. Truth is, YLNT is actually not very time-consuming for me. Adam and Scott do all the heavy lifting; I just show up and drink and talk about butts.

The projects I mentioned were a motley combination of on- and offline things that wouldn’t be all that interesting to catalog — except to say that public speaking is totally fun, but a lot more work than it first looks like. :-)

Again, thanks. I appreciate the kind words and patience. I hope I earn it.

Wax

And of course, waxing the yacht must make considerable demands on your time.

Your welcome

I think I can speak for just about everyone who regularly visits this site and say that it’s highly unlikely any of us would ever think, “You bastard! Why aren’t you paying any attention to your site!?” That would be demanding the very thing that goes against GTD: demanding more of your time and attention than you currently have. To bitch, moan, whine, and complain would otherwise go against the principles of what this site was founded on. We all appreciate the time and attention you devote to 43 Folders and other related sites. Keep up the good work! :)

Kindle

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the Kindle, Merlin. I’ve had one for months and love almost everything about it, though I would like a little interface design—i.e., folders!

Re: Kindle

Oh, totally. Once I put a big-ass card in this thing and really start filling up, that one-level-only home screen is going to make me nuts.

Have to imagine they’re working on that.

Another kindle request.

I’d like to know exactly what niche it fills in your reading diet.

I am tempted to get one, but I don’t want some gadget that I just play with that ends up making me even more unproductive.

On the other hand, it could be useful for work-related documents, as well as for reading Gutenberg and other free etexts. I don’t see myself paying for a DRMd ebook, though, when i love the originals so much.

Here’s to hoping that Apple makes a convertible Macbook/Jumbo iPhone with a touch/e-ink display.

Yup

Echo that…I’ve had my Kindle since January and I love love love it. Haven’t had much time to dig deep into other tricks and hacks, but I’m eager to read about what you find. :)

I'm so relieved.

And happy. Apparently on some subconscious level I was getting used to the idea that 43F might be um, er, well, you know….

Font geekery

Waitaminute - why are there serifs on that sample of Gill Sans up there? What are you doing to that lovely font???

(Oh, and I think Trebuchet’s an OK fallback for Windows machines without Gill Sans - although the point sizes are a little different.)

I wish Century Gothic was more readable at smaller sizes. Sigh.

xkcd comic

(Referring to martinpolley’s link above): That’s funny. As Merlin would say, “I don’t want to be that guy, but … “

I will be that guy anyway. The editor in me just wants to point out that, at least in this case, it shouldn’t be a hyphen but instead should be an en dash because it’s an open compound. Otherwise you would have ass-car, whether it’s sweet or not.

(Suddenly I’m reminded of the saying that a liberal arts education means one knows just enough about everything to be annoying at parties. Sorry.)
