43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work.

How would you use 2 extra hours each week?

If we take it as read that most of us have more things to do each day than we have hours to do them, consider this hypothetical: if you had two extra hours each week to use as you liked, how would you use them?

No time travel, assumed lottery wins, or unassisted human flight allowed; put simply, to what use would you apply an extra 120 minutes every week?

Me? I think I'd firewall the time to work toward a new skill. I've wanted to learn Ruby on Rails and basic Cantonese for a while now, so I think I'd use it for one of those. I definitely wouldn't use it to watch TV. I hope.

You?

My first thought would be to learn a second language, which I could easily see consuming 2 hours a week. (I've been pondering the idea for some time now, though I've yet to decide which. Suggestions are welcome! ;))

Wow, what wouldn't I do for 2 extra hours each week.

I already take language classes, so to me the time I spend in the classroom and doing homework wouldn't count in these extra time. If I had the extra hours I would like to be able to take back my hobbies, do more exercise, doing some order in my collections and different belongings...

Read

I know it sounds so sad but I am so busy (two jobs, full time single dad, upcoming wedding, refinishing one house, selling another) that I never have time to read books. I am lucky to even find a few minutes before I collapse from sheer exhaustion every night just to read a single magazine article.

Two extra hours would be gift from the gods.

Well, yes.. I suppose I...

Well, yes.. I suppose I *could* use two extra hours to sleep, too -- my body isn't liking the 5-6 hrs. it gets a night. (But come on, who needs *that* anyways, right..?)

I did gain two hour a "day"

When I started this job two years ago, I started driving 130 miles round trip and 2.5 hours (and often more) hours per day to and from work. I did this for 1.5 years. I finally moved to this area last summer; saving 100 miles and two hours a day. What a difference.

With that time, I am spending way too much time on this computer. But I have started back to working out a half hour a day. I am spending more time reading, and spending time with my wife finally. But I do need to take better advantage of this extra time

As a work-at-home writer I have too much time that I waste so I'm in the enviable position of not feeling like I don't have "time." In my case it's a matter of not wasting it.

I do feel like I've reclaimed time, though. I spend a lot of time driving and have discovered I love listening to audiobooks, plus I've started learning Italian via audio lessons I got from audible.

But if I honestly wanted to, I wouldn't have any trouble finding two hours to do something I wanted to do.

Okay, here you go. When time WAS an issue, I would have felt like I'd had a weekly vacation if I could have gone to a movie every week, and followed it up with a smart conversation about said movie.

With the caveat that it be two hours with my darling toddler asleep? I'd read, journal, scrapbook, or "play" with digital photos.

Edited to add: Ryan -- do you have any friends that speak one of the languages you're interested in learning? I've often thought that it would be helpful to have someone to converse with. . .

I have that knows a little Japanese (which I've considered).. and one or two others that have expressed interest in learning one with me, at least. Current considerations include (as noted) Japanese & French.. I'm open to suggestions, though!

Something for my body. ...

Something for my body. I do enough with my mind.

I don't need more classes or time to work... but I would benefit from being fitter, having physical fun, massages, swimming, being pampered. That kind of thing.
