Mac Security Question
pooks | Mar 30 2006
Not fun "grabass" but I need a quick answer and don't know where else to ask.... I'm sending my PowerBook back to Mac and it will probably end up with a new hard drive. I've backed up, etc., etc. But I just remembered what I almost forgot -- I do shop online. I don't recall whether my credit card numbers or anything like that are stored on the Mac. Where do I look to see, so I can remove them? 17 Comments

Make sure they're not stored in your keychain and be sure to delete all your cookies from Safari, Firefox, or any other browser. If you use a program like Caboodle or Yojimbo to store your credit card info, get that data off there. Finally, make sure you clear your stored passwords and things especially to places like Amazon, Paypal, eBay, and your credit card online access. I'm sure more sophisticated types (I'm looking at you, Emory!) will be along soon to add anything I've left out. »

You should be doing this anyway so that if your laptop gets jacked you'll not have to worry about some scumbag reading your email or looking at YOUR PORN. Don't bother with cleaning up, just encrypt your home directory. All of those items live in your home directory, and by enabling File Vault, you've just solved the problem completely. No muss, no fuss. »

Okay, that sounds great. Thanks! I'm assuming File Vault is something I will be able to search and find. »

It's important to know however, that a few people have had problems with Filevault and spotlight, if I remember correctly. I'd most likley enable File vault and frequently back up your critical files to a non-encrypted safe place (or a separate encryption standard), so that if filevault gets corrupted and goes down, you'll have a way to get back up with the critical files you need for work. BTW, Backups are smart anyways. ;) The pot calls the kettle black here... that reminds me, I need to check out rsync a lot harder again... I almost got it working lasttime.... Cheers!! »

I've seen some horror stories but honestly I've been using Tiger and FileVault since before 10.4 was on the shelves, and I've never had it once hiccup and trash my data. And Spotlight has always worked too. Though I don't use it that often since my reference material is all in DEVONthink and I do most of my searches in there! It is possible I wouldn't notice if it was borked. »

I tried to enable FileVault on my Powerbook and OS X said I didn't have enough available HD space to do so. :-\ »

FileVault should be okay for...Submitted by pooks on March 30, 2006 - 7:33pm.
FileVault should be okay for me, since it's just to keep somebody from getting my info and I'll be getting a new drive anyway. Thanks for the info. I'm off to Security! »
