Google Calendar: Slick, but does it sync?
macfixer | Apr 13 2006
Okay, I'm looking around and trying to figure out if I can get Google Calendar to sync with anything on my Mac. I see that I can import stuff, but that's kind of a bear. I also see that I can share my Google Calendar stuff, but that's not really letting me sync if it's read-only. Anyone  //k 7 Comments

You can manage your calendar...Submitted by Grieser on April 14, 2006 - 6:15am.
You can manage your calendar with google, and subscribe to your own google calendar via iCal. They give you the option in the calendar details page. A huge pain, but it could work. »
You will not be able...Submitted by michaelramm on April 14, 2006 - 8:04am.
You will not be able to "sync" in traditional terms. As Greiser said, you can view your Google Cal in any iCal client, but you will not be able to add anything via the iCal client (unless I am missing something). You are just viewing your calendar with iCal...it is not your true calendar. I do not think that there is any 2-way communincation goin on. Only 1-way (from Google to iCal) communication. These are just observations that I gathered in my 10 minute look at Google. Michael »

Google Calendar is a total...Submitted by emory on April 17, 2006 - 8:33am.
Google Calendar is a total swing-and-a-miss. I don't know why they even bothered putting it out there as-is. Right now it is just a stupid web calendar like any other. Even free software like phpicalendar is better for sharing/distributing calendars. (see a sample of phpicalendar here which is only for scooter-related events in New England at the moment ;) but requires you to use something like Sunbird or iCal to manage webcal events -- phpicalendar only lets you VIEW and DISTRIBUTE calendars via webcal or RSS. »

emory wrote: Google Calendar is a total swing-and-a-miss. Totally agree with you on this one. Usually, Google puts something out there that does something new and different. Even Yahoo! has a way to sync info with their server (although it isn't Mac friendly at the moment). Quote: phpicalendar...requires you to use something like Sunbird or iCal to manage webcal events -- phpicalendar only lets you VIEW and DISTRIBUTE calendars via webcal or RSS. I have been working on a new website for my church, and we have been having great luck with WP-iCal plugin for Wordpress. Basically, it takes posts from a certain category and creates an iCal calendar out of it that is subscribable. I simply set the plugin to publish to the calendars directory for my PHPiCalendar installation and Bob's your uncle. I am currently testing a new version that supports multiple calendars as well. Garrick has been a huge help in supporting this plugin and it has saved me so much work. I can't say enough good things about him and his plugin. If you are using Drupal, you can use the Event module. This creates calendars and makes them viewable on site without PHPiCalendar installation. I know this is a bit OT, but I happened to have some experience and thought it might be helpful to someone out there. EDIT: Misspelled Garrick's last name, didn't put links to him and his plugin, and didn't explain that WP-iCal is for Wordpress in case someone didn't know. Spanning Sync works very well for me, seamlessly syncing iCal ->gCal->iCal. I just enter data on either and it appears on the other. »
Spanning Sync works...Submitted by codykniffen on September 27, 2007 - 7:12am.
…but that’s functionality that should be free and just work with iCal/Google Calendar. Someone turned me on to Plaxo.com the other day. It does take some getting used to, but once it is set up you can sync your data (Address Book/Calendars) between your Mac and Google accounts. What you’re looking to do (unless I’m mistaken) has been discussed over here. Give it a go and let me know what you think. »
