Index Card Storage?
mdl | Jul 27 2006
Has anyone found a good, relatively cheap index card file? I use the little plastic boxes but would ideally like to get something with more ample room for my growing index card reference collection. I've hung around on ebay for ages, looking for old library card catalogues. But these get pretty expensive, and many of them are for pick-up only. They can also be pretty dingy. I would love a simple, new index card file (especially one made of wood). The ideal would be a single drawer unit with the possibility of buying additional units. Any ideas? Maybe I'm not looking in the right places... 13 Comments

It seems like a saw a banker's box type index card file at my Staples or Office Depot. I will look more deliberately next time I'm in. »
CD Storage box?Submitted by Paul on July 29, 2006 - 11:51am.
How about using a CD storage box of some kind? It's taller than you need for 3x5s, but the width is right, and you can get index card-sized tabs at an office supply store to organize the cards (I pay $0.08 each at the University Bookstore here. A great investment). I just saw some nice ones in Target's back-to-school section. They have some rather hip products under the label "Independent Studies." $4.99, I think. I'm sure there are also many, many other choices. »

Recipe cards are usually 3 by 5, so the boxes are useable for any 3 by 5 card collection. You might have to search for the features you want, but Ebay has pages and pages of recipe boxes up for sale. New plain ones are typically available at craft stores, such as JoAnn Fabrics or Michael's, and are often quite reasonable in price. Decorated cardboard boxes often show up at TJ Maxx, Marhsall's and Steinmart, and can be in various sizes suited to 3 by 5 and other card sizes. Gotta think outside the office supply box on this one! Great idea on the recipe boxes! If you don't mind sifting through a whole heap of cutesy kitchen kitsch, a Froogle search for "recipe card boxes" yields some interesting results. Here, for instance, is a roll-top, 80s bread box style wooden index card holder: http://www.brandsplace.com/0117-rb-132470.html This lead seems promising. Thanks! »

And -- in a perfect world, how many drawers would you want in a system? I first thought one long drawer would be plenty. But even thinking about pulling out one long drawer and having everything all in the same drawer makes me itch, for some reason. Then I thought, "Two drawers, one for personal and one for writing/professional." But then I started thinking, Maybe I want four drawers, one for home projects, one for ... etc., etc. I don't want an entire big card catalog, but I'm having trouble figuring out how many drawers I do want. How do you or would you keep your cards, if you had enough to keep stored and not always carrying them all with you? »
