Hi, I'm a newbie so please excuse me if this quesion is a little basic. I'm thinking of ways of organising my files more effectively and bridging the gap between computer based files and handwritten notes/workings etc (I work in software development and my work involves quite a lot of math). Having used tags on sites like Flickr, I think that model would work quite well as an organisational tool in Windows. For example - to group files with 'train of thought' tags rather than by a specific project etc. Does anyone know of a tool that would facilitate this in windows. I use a Mac most of the time for non-work stuff and utilise smart-folders for grouping similar files. I don't think this is possible in windows though. Thanks! 4 Comments

In windows, (almost?) all files...Submitted by ewand on March 5, 2007 - 5:43am.
In windows, (almost?) all files have a set of 'Summary Properties' associated with them. These include Title, Subject, Author, Category, Keywords and Comments properties. You could use the Keywords property to store tags relevant to that file. To search for files that have a particular tag, you need to have Windows Desktop Search installed, because the standard windows search will not search the Summary Properties. To search for files with a particular tag, you would use the WDS syntax The problem is then how to tag large numbers of files. Windows provides no convenient way of doing this, leaving you to edit the tags of each file individually. However, I have written a little piece of software specifically to solve this problem. It allows you do batch-edit a bunch of files' Summary Properties very easily, from a graphical interface. Using WDS and this tool, I have implemented a tag-based filing system similar to the one you describe. Let me know if this sounds like it would work for you, and I'll make the software available to all on this forum. Cheers, ewand »

Let me chime in with a +1 for a utility that would allow for "mass tagging" of Windows files .... I'd love to take a peek. BK »

I'd probably find it useful as well. +2 if source is available, and +3 if it's Python ;) »
Windows tagging toolSubmitted by Olivier on June 10, 2007 - 3:38am.
A windows application called TagAndFacet is available on http://www.tagandfacet.com. It is running on windows Vista and Windows XP. It enables users to tag all types of files and folders. It also integrates Outlook email tagging and Internet Explorer tagging. Search capability is integrated for all sources (files, emails and urls). »
