What are your favorite job search tools?

Over on my blog JobMob, I posted the above question for my readers:

Which tools, websites, software, etc., have worked for you or your friends?

Terribly Specific BAG questions

Okay, so I am a bit of an obsessive.

Would anyone know the maker of the bag in Reign over Me, the Sandler movie?

Or more importantly the maker of the hardware that was the strap attachment point?

I am trying to get a custom leather laptop bag made, and really liked that hardware. But cannot find it.

Writer's Portfolio Web Site -- WordPress, Drupal or Something Else?

I want to put up a Web site that offers a portfolio of my writing samples, along with a blog, and probably other professional stuff that escapes me at the moment.

What do people recommend for setting up a site like this? Would you use a CMS? If so, which one?

If anyone can offer any examples of good writing portfolio Web sites, please let me know. Thanks!

Robyn

Paperless on a budget

Been thinking a bit about getting rid of some old paper files I have and want to get them on a pc for the lowest cost possible.

I wanted to kick this idea around a bit and see if it fights back…

The problem: I have a cheap scanner and my budget doesn’t stretch to a nice automated scanner like the ScanSnap.

Solution: My idea is this, scan the pages as images and ocr them. Ocr isn’t perfect, as you all know, but as long as it can produce valid search text I don’t care too much.  read more »

To-Do, Is tech even needed?

So I was on LifeHacker and saw a recent post mentioning a sticky note program called “Hott Notes” (http://lifehacker.com/358564/make-and-take-your-sticky-notes-with-hott-notes) which seems like a very productive little app. Its your basic sticky note program with lots of little graphical and optional details you can tweak and change. Until now, I’ve been using the tried and true “ToDo.txt” method and that’s working just fine. But for now I’ll be giving this a whirl.  read more »

Who has the brilliant solution?

OK, which one of you brilliant souls has come up with a way to have reliable 2-way synchronization between OmniFocus and Palm Pilots while keeping the Palm form essentially the same way it is in Omnifocus?

All workable solution welcome!

Calendar and reminder system for windows XP

Hi guys. I’ve recently been implementing a basic GTD system. But I am stuck on a good calendar and reminder system for windows. Currently I use google calendar for appointments (and an email reminder). However, I would prefer the option of a popup reminder for some events (I check email only twice a day). Also, I haven’t figured out a good way to implement a tickler file. I have been creating all day events in goog calender. My ideal requirements would be :  read more »

  • syncronization over 2 PCs.

Together - thoughts?

Has anyone used Together (formerly Keep It Together)? How does it stack up as one of those “store everything here” applications? I’ve been intrigued by these sorts of programs, but their uses seem to be somewhat obscure to me. Anyone care to share their experience, or how they use it?

What to Do With Old (Digital) Files

This is a pretty simple question, and I have a couple of ideas, but I wanted to ping you all to see what you’re up to on this front.

My main documents folder (~/Documents/trunk for those of you scoring at home) is up to about 5.5GB. A lot of this is cruft. Some of it is from prior school semesters. Some of it is graphics files that aren’t actively being used. Some of it is client work. (This should be moving to Subversion soon, however.) I’m sure some of it is even duplicate work. For instance, flat .jpg copies of a Fireworks PNG or Photoshop PSD.  read more »

paste into multiple fields with Quicksilver?

During my normal work day, I do a lot of work in a web-based database application. And for the really repetitive data entry items, I have set up triggers to paste the “canned text” into different fields. But I have yet to figure out how I can paste into multiple fields at once with one trigger. Is this possible?

For example: Right now… I manually place my cursor in a field… hit Cmd+Opt+O to paste the first bit of text… hit the [Tab] key on my keyboard… hit Cmd+Opt+P to paste the next bit of text… hit the [Tab] key on my keyboard… hit Cmd+Opt+[ to paste the last bit of text.  read more »
