Best Free PDF maker?

Hi, all. I'm sort of surprised to find myself in the Windoze forum, but that's how it goes I guess.

I'm getting fed up with people sending me documents that I only need to read in their Microsoft Office format. Usually, .doc and .xls are the culprits but today I received a .pub. A freakin' Publisher file! So, I'm instituting a new "idiot" reply for such folks, and I wanted to see what you Windows users are using for making PDF's. (It's built into OS X as it should be.)

There are only three requirements:

  1. Free
  2. Easy to download and install.
  3. Simple to learn and use.

A quick search of VersionTracker didn't turn up anything with user ratings, so I am reticent to recommend any of them.

Apparently my VersionTracker-fu failed me. Anyone have experience with cutePDF Writer? A couple of solid reviews, but I'd still like to get your input.

PDFCreator

PDFCreator should work. Out of the box problems with Vista, but the Wikipedia article links to a fix or two for that. For XP and earlier, should be no problems.

I second the recommendation for PDFCreator. Makes generating PDFs almost as easy on Windows as it is on Linux :P Also a handy solution to a wide variety of printing ills (since you get to print from Acrobat Reader, which offers a lot more options for printing than many other programs), and if you have cygwin, you can use ghostscript and pstools to convert to PostScript and do other manipulations (like page reordering for book printing).

Two 43F recs is enough for me! I'll suggest this to every idiot in my life who sends me files I don't need to edit. Thanks!

I use CutePDF exclusively in my office. I used PDFCreator for awhile, but it failed me a couple of times (and did not work at all when I upgraded my machine to Vista). So I moved to CPDF. It has worked like a charm.

Easy install (easier than PDFCreator at least)
Creates a CutePDF Printer that you have to select to make the PDF

I fully recommend CutePDF.

I am in the exact...same...frustrating position as you.

In my faculty, when revisions of documents that are destined for the public (students) are disseminated for revision, I always add that I'd be more than glad to convert it to PDF for them. Though...I use Acrobat Professional 8 :p I just can't stand the idea of sending out an official form in an editable form.

Great question, it helped me too.

Thanks for the idea. I had some trouble running it on vista ,but I never thought that checking a wiki article for a solution to the problem.

I use ghost script, when I want to create excellent quality PDF. In a wrong way, I use OpenOffice to save my documents in PDF format.
