Best virus protection to use

I have been all over the internet and no one agrees. What is the best anti-virus program to use. Also which ones should I stay away from. I have an idea of the ones I should stay away from but I would like some input from everyone.

Avast

As far as what is "best"...I can't answer that, sorry.

I use Avast home (free) and have been very happy. My computer: WinXP / 512MB RAM / 1.4GHZ Celeron. I switched from AVG free when I began to have trouble w/the updates.

Here is an article from PC World that rates Avast as best free AV.

On a similar subject, if you are looking for a great free firewall, try out Comodo. I dumped Zone Alarm (was eating up my system resources), and Comodo runs so light you hardly know it is there.

Best wishes.

Freebies!

I'm using Avast as well. So far, so good. Several months ago I made the switch from paid to free antivirus and firewall, and all has gone well. I had no problems with Norton, but learned that there are freebies that work just as well.

I like playing around with the PC, so it doesn't bother me to manage multiple apps for security (I think all the "suites" are paid programs).

Sites such as CNET have some good compilations of reviews. It sounds like Avast, AVG, and GriSoft are all pretty well-regarded.

I may give Comodo a try. I'm using Zone Alarm firewall now, but I often have to set it to Medium security to get the interwebs to work.

I've used both AVG and...

I've used both AVG and Avast and would feel confident running either of them. For free software they are both excellent.

However on my primary laptop, running Windows Vista, I do not run an antivirus. I also dont run a 3rd party firewall. I use the built-in Windows firewall and I've got a router between me and the outside world. I use Firefox instead of IE and I've never had an issue. I used to run a scan using HouseCall, a free online browser based anti-virus, every once in a while but I'm not too worried about it.

That being said, I am an IT professional and am very careful about what I do on my machines. For many people, you just gotta have AV running if you are running Windows so my setup is not what I would recommend for everyone.

Norton Never Again

I abandoned Norton when they stopped supporting my version months before the subscription had expired. They would not budge so they’re history in my book. Who’s Norton? Never heard of ‘em. I’ve used AVG Free by Grisoft ever since and it’s working great. The original question though, is sort of like “Which flavor is better, strawberry or blueberry” unless someone posts a link to a scientific review.
