Best Tips on Finding the Job
Jamie Phelps | Aug 10 2007
OK, fellow boarders, I need your best tips on finding the job. Not just a job, but that job that you'd stay at forever if they'd let you. I'll be in IT if that helps shape your recs. Basically, I want your tips and resources for finding the job and for negotiating demands. Book recommendations are good, but I'm also interested in your anecdotal resources both from the job seeker and employee seeker (nee hiring manager) POV. 4 Comments

Jamie, I'd like to know...Submitted by Chrome47 on August 13, 2007 - 10:56am.
Jamie, I'd like to know how to do this, too, so I'll be following this. (Chances are, though, that I'll eventually get out of 9-5 altogether and paint in my studio full-time.) »

Get Nick Corcodilos' book "Ask The Headhunter" (http://www.asktheheadhunter.com/">http://tinyurl.com/27lwny to Amazon.com), peruse his articles at http://www.asktheheadhunter.com/, and subscribe to his newsletter. Basically, his advice is to find THE company you want to work for, make yourself known to the people there via networking, and when a position opens up, they'll think of you first. He also has a very strong interview strategy. In his view, the resume is a formality that is sent to HR after you've been hired. I've fortunately not been in a position where I've had to use his knowledge, but it makes total sense to me. Good luck! »

Have you tried FrontHunter’s software? (If you use a Mac, like me, I just use it on XP using VMWare). Also, I’m trying to get like-minded people like yourself to share tips on how to be more productive about the job search process with my new forum site— http://www.jobphish.com/digress/. Feel free to post away- it’s new, so don’t be shy about making a new post =) also, feel free to drop me a line, I appreciate feedback. I’d like to help out people in the job process in anyway I can. »

I don’t know if it’s The Job but I did recently take an programming internship with a retail chain. It’s a good step-up position and pays almost three times what I was making at my previous job. I would welcome any hints you all can give down the road, though. So, don’t think this thread is off limits now that I am more gainfully employed. »
