Uninstalling Keyword Assistant fixes iPhoto hang
Merlin Mann | May 27 2005
Ever since upgrading to Tiger, my iPhoto.app has just launched, and then hung eternally with The Spinning Beach Ball of Death™. Uninstalling an old version of “Keyword Assistant” fixed the problem immediately, and now I’m the happiest boy in the world. (And, yes, I know that this will be useful to relatively few of you, but it was such a pain to me that I wanted to make sure the solution gets some Google Juice for others. Public service.) Fixed for Tiger(edit 2005-05-27) I was remiss not to mention that KA has been fixed for Tiger; a fresh version of Keyword Assistant can be obtained here. Yes, you just made my day. I had the exact problem since I have installed Tiger a few weeks ago. Just wished that I had found this solution earlyer. »

The new version of KA (1.8.6, I think) works just fine in 10.4.1, though it did have problems with 10.4.0. Now, if someone would just fix the MS Office 2004 Suite on Tiger… »

Yep. I had the same problem until I uninstalled Keyword Assistant. Ultimately, it was a kick in the pants to backup/archive my last year’s worth of photos. »

[What’s wrong with Office 2004?] Various folks are reporting the beach ball of death when interacting with most parts of the Office Suite on Tiger. It’s evidently not an epidemic, but it’s happening to me and a Google turned up other victims as well. It often happens to me on app launch with Word and Excel, but sometimes will wait until I’m a little ways into a task with one of these apps before showing up. At which point I freak out and worry about all the stuff I’m about to lose. Most of the other folks having this problem force quit the app. I’ve found that if I let it sit (sometimes for up to two minutes) it will come back and behave correctly from then on. Looks like some sort of service time out issue to me. Reinstalls haven’t helped me or others that I’ve read about. »
