”What’s 43 Folders?”
43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work.

OmniOutliner: Spacebar for mouseless dropdown selection

Speaking of R'ing TFM, OmniGroup's crackerjack techs responded almost immediately to my recent "feature request" that I be able to select items from OmniOutliner dropdown menus without using the mouse.

Already there. Just hit spacebar and start typing the first few letters of the item you want, and there you go. Personally I've set my TAB action to "Go to next cell" (rather than the default "Indent") so my OO efficiency just ticked up several notches with this one.

In other news, the new unofficial motto of 43 Folders is going to be “The only truly obvious things are those things that you already know. (And, regrettably, not everyone is you yet.)”

After much frustration trying out...

After much frustration trying out what seemed to me to be the obvious keys for triggering dropdown selection, I finally resorted to RTFM as well. Sadly, I didn't think to share my discovery.

Shame on me for forgetting the maxim: "When in doubt, flood Merlin's inbox with every damn thing that comes into your awareness." :P

IIRC, the actual manual didn't have the tidbit about the spacebar and dropdowns, but the online help did. The manual seemed much more geared toward novice users. NewNewsWire takes this a step further and relies entirely on the online help.

The lack of a comprehensive and linear (so online help doesn't really cut it) reference is a problem for those of us who want to really tap into the power of the apps we use. I can't find a feature in the online help if I don't know it exists in the first place. The only way to see every nook and cranny is to read or at least skim the docs from start to finish.
