Help me stick to it

I flout my GTD, all the time.

I'm currently having real difficulties following my GTD routine and because of this i'm letting things slip. I've recently been getting home from work and not doing anything at all, flouting my next actions and deciding what to do there and then (which usually involves playing games or watching TV).

Today i'm sat in work and i don't even have a copy of my NA's or my moleskine to hand, i've left them abandoned at home in my bag.

I love GTD but i'm having great difficulty applying myself to it. Has anyone got any suggestions which may help me stick to my routine?

Unschedules

Quick Q: How well do people really track every moment of their time when first starting out The Now Habit? It is in principle a very great idea... I'm just worried that in practice I'll never be able to track everything and invariably lose something. [Due most likley to my time-binging and ultra-focus moments..]

I never have built a real Unschedule, and I think I got exactly zero answers when I asked my Yahoo Group if they had done so.

What I did instead was to make a list of my typical daily activities during my work hours, with durations. As the Unschedule recommends, I started with the non-work stuff -- web time, lunch, GTD time, etc. -- and then figured out how much of a typical work day is actually available for "work."

Sure enough, my inner voice went "wow," and I became aware of how little time I really had to get things done if I were to maintain my non-work activities. This has helped me focus on work during work time, because I know how much time I have allotted to other things.

I think one of the keys of the Unschedule is to treat your non-work things with just as much seriousness as your work things. (GTD does much the same.) When you actually block off a chunk of your day for web surfing, you can see the time it takes out of your day. If you don't put it on your schedule, you aren't aware of how much time it really eats up.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
