NYC: best shopping for carry-on & overnight bags?

All this recent talk about bags has me thinking that I'd like to buy one good carry-on bag and one good overnight as well. Since I'll be in NYC at the end of the month, can anyone recommend any stores and bags there for me to check out? This is the kind of thing that I'd rather see and try out for myself rather than just do mail order.

To give you an idea, my tastes tend to run on the practical side, so I'm guessing ballistic nylon over leather. In a typical carry-on I tend to have my 12" PowerBook, iPod, Bose headphones, tons of reading material (mostly unread magazines that have piled up which I throw away after I finish them on the flight), a clipboard filled with crosswords, a bunch of comic books, a paperback sometimes, colored pens for occasional doodling, a small Moleskin, a sandwich and a water bottle. (You can guess I get pretty darn close to the size limit. Guess I'm also a prime candidate for trimming down what I tote along.)

Let's hear what you have to suggest for stores to visit. Heck, if there are any recommended stores like that here in Boston, I'd like to know of those as well.

I'm blogging on travel stuff...

I'm blogging on travel stuff right now, and will be discussing my experiences in choosing a carryon in a few days. But for the record, even though I keep getting sidetracked and buying other stuff, when I start packing to go somewhere I still always use my Rick Steves bag:

I see it's on sale (20 dollars off) right now. It's the best bargain around, even at full price. Buy the padded shoulder strap to go with it. (I bought an Eagle Creek one when I bought my RS bag in the late 90s.)

Their only store is in Seattle, though!

It just holds more in a more compact manner, but of course part of that is also how you pack!
