Open Thread: Whither Blackberry? What's your fallback plan?

BlackBerry shutdown closer after ruling - U.S. Business - MSNBC.com

RICHMOND, Va. - A federal judge has rejected an effort by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. to settle a patent case and moved a step closer to reissuing an injunction that threatens the device’s e-mail service in the United States.

RIM said in a statement that it has been preparing technology that would keep its service running in the U.S., where most of its 3.65 million BlackBerry customers are based.

Damn, this could be pretty big stuff, eh?

I'm guessing at least a few of you out there are rabid Blackberry users -- I've never even used one myself, but I have friends who live on theirs. So, I'm curious: How do you feel about the possibility of losing Blackberry service? If it went away today, what would you use instead? Do you have a fallback plan?

This lawsuit is all about...

This lawsuit is all about MONEY. The people suing are a company that goes out and steals patents when they come due. Then they extort cash from the company that worked to develop the idea. It's all about money, and guess what? You are going to pay for it in higher material and service costs. Blackberry won't go out of business, they will redevelop the data exchange format and the looser will be the people trying to sue.

I had TWO Treo's and then switched over to the Cingulat 7100G. I would not trade it for the world. I found the Treo's unsupported by Palm and Cingular, and buggy at best. I was an IT guy in the past, and am now in surgical sales.

I know what works and what is needed in the sales and business day. There is a setting in the handheld where you can turn off the device on the weekends or nights, and I use it.

I am in the car a lot, and enjoy not getting at home at night with 900 emails waiting for me. It has a hard screen and I like that a lot. I broke a Treo screen in my pocket when my ear bud pushed into it.

And trust me, if you are talking to someone the rudest thing to do is stand they’re tapping your little box with that stupid plastic pen. I use a moleskine notebook and datebook. They work MUCH better than an electronic device. YOU CAN'T BEAT PAPER!!!

I have 1000+ contacts in it, and sync it with ACT 2005. It is solid and works 100% of the time, unlike my Treo that worked 40%. Batteries are solid and last twice as long as the TREO, and I have never NEVER dropped a call with it. With the TREO I dropped 3 out of 5 calls.
