Vox Pop: What's your "Mac Whine?"

We've started a new feature over on MacBreak Weekly that I really hope becomes a regular thing: "_Mac Whines_!"

Yeah, sure, I'm an unapologetic Apple fanboy (I, mean duh), but some stuff about my Mac experience makes me crazy. Have you got a beef with your Mac or OS X you want to shout from the shiny counter of the "Genius" Bar? Yeah, me too.

I'll open with:

  • inexplicable iCal "snooze" options (per MBW 30 -- which, incidentally, may also be my favorite MacBreak Weekly to date)
  • near-hangs whenever a mounted network volume is no longer available
  • no way to (temporarily) enable password-free user switching
  • The Finder. The goddamned Finder.

What's your Mac Whine?

1) I find...

1) I find managing window sizes a real pain. Why doesn’t the maximize button just fill the screen? I spend way too time going to that lower-right-hand corner to drag out windows. (I think apps like Write Room and Scrivener are showing us how wonderful full-screen interfaces can be.)

This is it for me. I can't believe I can't maximize windows. Clicking the green button in iTunes actually turns it into a mini player! This blew my mind when I switched, especially with all the talk of usability and standardized UI support. Windows and Linux both are doing this right, while macs are broken. I have a widescreen format laptop screen and I can't easily make Safari take the whole screen? Is this a joke?

No matter, osx was quickly relegated to a little 12GB partition, and gentoo is now running happily, with everything good except I only have one mouse button for some silly reason.

Mac does alot right, but those things they don't, no one ever talks about, and new users are likely to be surprised by them. It seems that there are serious fundamental flaws in osx that have never been dealt with, and they are not complex issues from what I can see, they are annoyances that should have been destroyed years ago.

Cranking

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
