Location of files?

I was dilegently going through my massive inbox this weekend...Still trying to get it to "Empty" when I realized that MOST of my "Stuff" is reference material...

How important is it to have your file cabinet next to your desk? I have a smallish, one drawer hanging file cabinet that sits next to my computer. I was thinking of setting that one up with my tickler file, and then using the massive, heavy duty 5 drawer one for reference. The problem is that the big one doesn't fit in the room with the computer, it is in the next room.

Do people find that part (Which David Allen insists is crucial) really THAT important?

Thanks,

SG

For me, the answer is...

For me, the answer is sort of:

I've sorted my files in to current and archive:

The current stuff is pretty much anything that I've had a desire to file recently, bank statements, information about furniture I'm looking for, &tc. These things have to be right next to my desk or I never file them away because it's too much of a pain to get up and walk over to the filing cabinet.

The archive stuff consists of things I can't convince myself to get rid of, but I don't need ready access to. E.g. I love maps (and they come in handy) but the map of Millau, France doesn't get used very often, so it's stored into my archive. I do the same thing with research (papers and the like) from my dissertation. I don't want to get rid of it, but I want to keep it for posterity. (If I were doing this today, I'd probably just keep pdfs but I wrote my thesis in the dark ages.)

Occasionally I sort through the current stuff and decide what to do with it: still current?, archive or trash. This allows me to get by with a 2-drawer cabinet next to my desk and those plastic crates full of stuff elsewhere.
