”What’s 43 Folders?”
43Folders.com is Merlin Mann’s website about finding the time and attention to do your best creative work.

How do you motivate yourself?

How do you motivate yourself even to get to the stage of motivating yourself TO motivate yourself?

I procrastinate a lot at work and end up doing a day's worth in the last couple of hours..

Any advice?

Is it something else?

I'm new here so please forgive any newbie mistakes...

There may be something more at play here than just "motivation". I've suffered from this for many years. What I've come to find out is that my particular problems are in part due to A.D.D. (Adult Attention Defecit Disorder). Many will quickly dismiss this as just being lazy but that's not what this is about.

I've beat myself up for years wondering why can't I get things done. If you do the research you'll find there's a very real neuro-psychological phenonenea at play. Here's some typical symptoms:

- Feeling like you're underachieving your potential
- Endless to-do lists that you never follow
- Frustration at your ability to "get organized"
- More than average speeding tickets
- Willing to drive miles out of your way to avoid traffic
- Lack of friends
- Frequently interupting people
- Low self esteem
- Difficulty maintaining long term friendships
- Paying more than average late fees or delinquent penalties
- Depression

These are just a few on some of the common lists of A.D.D. traits. Having one or two doesn't mean you have A.D.D. but if you read the leading research and find you have many of the traits on any given list there's a good chance that A.D.D. may be at the root of your problem.

There are some excellent books on the subject and the good news is that many can be "cured" through behavior modification work and medication.

A.D.D. IS REAL! For many years even many well-meaning people dismissed it as a character flaw but for those of us that suffer from it (~2%) it can be very debilitating. One of the leading titles on the subject is: "Delivered From Distraction" by Dr. Hallowell et al. If you find yourself with many of the symptoms I mentioned above I strongly suggest some research on the subject.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
