Creative Post-It Usage

I have a dry-erase board in my room with the same notes I left for myself several months ago. I found that post-its work much better for what I was trying to do with it -- provide reminders for myself. The only thing to refine was a slight bit of resistance in finding a post-it, writing the reminder, and affixing it to the door, but I found a hack.

I had been thinking of getting one of those pop-up post-it dispensers (especially after seeing the Machinist), but I just couldn't justify the (albeit relatively low) cost, since it's really not that hard to put up a post-it as it is.

My hack, then, is to put a bunch of blank post-its in some pattern (I made them say 'Hi' this time) on whatever surface you normally use so they're already there when you want to use them.

I love whiteboards.

I have two in my room.

I write down all the night's tasks on the whiteboard, then I make a special area with a progress bar in it with some number of hours of work I want to get done (between school, professional, and anything else worth doing).

Then I commit to work until a certain time, usually an hour or half hour, and I write the time I would stop on the board. And when I'm done, I take a quick break, and I fill in the progress bar.

I tried using post its for when I'm studying and I come up with some seemingly brilliant idea. I had a wall full of post its with dumb ideas on them.

Then I got a sketchbook, and I just make a quick sketch or outline in there, and I can flip back through and think of additional things to add or refine.

Cranking

Merlin used to crank. He’s not cranking any more.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »

Scared Shitless

Merlin’s scared. You’re scared. Everybody is scared.

This is the video of Merlin’s keynote at Webstock 2011. The one where he cried. You should watch it. »
