What I love about Quicksilver

Let me count the ways:

1. The Shelf. 'nuff said.
2. Comma trick.
3. Access to my bookmarks without having a browser open.
4. I can look up any word in one keystroke.
5. cmd-esc.
6. Composing simple email.
7. Text manipulation.
8. Clipboard mania.

oh, and 9. Launching programs.

I'm sure there are many others but these are the main reasons I could not imagine having a Mac without Quicksilver.

Why do you need the shelf for this? I can do the same thing with the comma trick. Find a file you want to move, press comma, lather, rinse, repeat. Then perform the action on all the files at once.*

My understanding of the shelf (which I also do not use very much) is that it's for keeping frequently used information handy. That snippet of code you seem to use a thousand times a day. Text of an email you send regularly. (but why aren't you using mailtemplate?) I haven't ever found much use for it. I suppose it could save me a lot of time in writing code if I ever thought to use it. I'm sure it will come in handy when I begin my computer science program.

Like I said, there are probably different ways of doing things, I just happened to like using the shelf. I use the comma trick all the time, but sometimes the comma trick doesn't do what I want, like copypasting multiple items. Try highlighting some text and hitting cmd-esc (send selection to Quicksilver) and then using the comma trick. I thought this would be a great way to copypaste several items but when you try to do this all you get is one item called "combined item". If I use the shelf, however, I can do all of that relatively easily. I could probably just as easily use the clipboard, but what fun would that be? ;)

Cranking

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
