Laptops: A blessing or a curse?

When I got my first laptop, I loved the exhilarating freedom of whipping it out anytime I "needed" it. No matter where I am, I could work on a project, balance a budget, or play a video game. Years later, despite its "convenience", I'm dangerously married to my laptop.

It's with me virtually everywhere. On the bus, at work, at home, in bed. And yes, it even goes with me to the toilet--the perfect time for multi-tasking, right? According to my estimate, I spend twice as much time looking at an LCD screen than high-definition reality.

My laptop, supposedly handy, is now just an easy excuse to work (or procrastinate) at any time, all the time. I need help, and it's time for an intervention.

Do you have an unhealthy marriage with your laptop? Have you switched back to desktops? How have you coped? Please share.

Re: Laptops: A Blessing or a Curse?

I too have done the park the MacBookPro method to get me to sto p carrying it around everywhere and working all the time. Now, the MBP only goes with me to visit a client if I require a laptop . I send out agendas before each meeting , carry print outs I need to the meeting , and rarely take a laptop with me.

At home, we have a family rule, no computer use after 7:30pm for any reason, with the exception of days I am "on call" and may have to remote connect to a server somewhere. Also, if we're checking movie times, restaurant reviews before heading out , or to print out directions somewhere.

I too am guilty of laptop in the bathroom, honestly, there's nothing to do but stare at the wall, and magazines get boring after awhile. For that, I have my first Mac, an iBook, crippled with only 256MB of Ram (it used to hav e 768, but the 512 stick died, and I chose to not replace it specifically for this). The ibook is fast enough to bring up a website, slow enough to make me not spend more time than I need to on it.

For me, its all about making a conscious decision to not use the laptop all the time. As "convenient" as they are , they are like cell phones, and have invaded our free time . Its up to us to decided not to use them when not necessary.

This is an essay about family, priorities, and Shakey’s Pizza, and it’s probably the best thing he’s written. »
