Choosing my next Canon lens

Need lens-buying advice from Canon photography nerds.

The Mrs. and Me are starting to really dig taking photos again -- she with a Rebel XT and me with a 30D. We currently share joint custody of 1) the XT's standard 18-55mm zoom (blech) and 2) the glorious and much-loved 50mm f1.4 (yay!).

So, let's say, hypothetically, a fella wanted to pick up a new Canon lens to add to these two cameras' modest arsenal. If we wanted a fast, flexible lens (that would mostly get used for baby picture-taking), what would you guys recommend? Possibly a higher-end, faster zoom?

An 80-200mm is a great lens for portrait shots

I always got great shots from my Tamron 80-200mm back in the day ...with my Canon Film SLR. Now that I've switched to the EOS 400D (same as digital rebel in USA?) I'm hoping to pick up something similar. Unless you're really a pro, I don't think that it's worth paying extra for Canon specific lenses when there are some good third party makers out there.

I currently have a Canon made 28-90mm for my existing film based Canon and am going to experiment over the holidays with this on the Digital camera.

Not sure how much you are looking to spend but I imagine that old film based lenses can be picked up pretty cheaply now and there's a great page at
http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html
which details all the compatibility between old and new lenses on the EOS range.
That article also explains why the "L" lenses are so much more pricey.
Tempting to buy something now though , as Canon are doing a cashback offer till 31 Dec in the UK. Not
sure if that applies where you are.
