Choosing my next Canon lens
Merlin Mann | Dec 18 2007
Need lens-buying advice from Canon photography nerds. The Mrs. and Me are starting to really dig taking photos again -- she with a Rebel XT and me with a 30D. We currently share joint custody of 1) the XT's standard 18-55mm zoom (blech) and 2) the glorious and much-loved 50mm f1.4 (yay!). So, let's say, hypothetically, a fella wanted to pick up a new Canon lens to add to these two cameras' modest arsenal. If we wanted a fast, flexible lens (that would mostly get used for baby picture-taking), what would you guys recommend? Possibly a higher-end, faster zoom? 36 Comments

Nikon equivalent?Submitted by kristarella on December 28, 2007 - 1:27am.
I'm a Nikon user myself - not because I swing that way more than the other. It was just chance that my first SLR was Nikon so I kept with it so I could use my old lens. The most versatile lens I've seen for Nikon is 24-200 f/3.5-5.6 with vibration reduction. If there was something similar for Canon I would go for that. A lot of suggestions here have said get 75-? or 80-?. I have a 70-300mm, which I love for beach, sports and moon shots, but I'm always disappointed when someone runs up to me with something intersting and I have to back-up 5m just to fit them in. I imagine that could happen a lot with kids (more so when they start crawling and walking I guess). I think you need the versatility of a wider angle, zoom lens. My $0.02 :) » POSTED IN:
