Quicksilver: Arrow Into Web Pages

Just discovered (yet another) unlighted corner of Quicksilver. As with an earlier set of tricks, this one uses the mighty right arrow.

  1. Invoke Quicksilver (ctrl-spacebar by default)
  2. Type the first few letter of the title of a web page
  3. When you’ve found the page you want, right-arrow into the page
    • Give it a second to think
    • Quicksilver will return a list of all the links in that web page
  4. Select one of the links and hit ENTER to visit the page.

Qswebarrow_browse

Pretty neat. Uses the built-in HTML kit to fetch an updated version of the page on demand.

I think this requires the Safari Bookmarks module although it appears to work with the Safari History module too. I believe it also probably requires a recent version of the app (available from the QS site). Haven’t tried it in a Firefox setup, but I suspect it works the same.

I’ve tried it with a couple different pages using the Firefox module, and haven’t been able to make it work. As you can see in this screencap, the drop-down menu indicates that right-arrowing isn’t possible.

Hey, Margaret. Are you in beta mode? That’s where a lot of the good stuff hides. :)

It doesn’t seem to require any Safari modules. (Or Safari, for that matter.) I use OmniWeb and have the OmniWeb plugin installed and it spits back all the links on the entered page. (Complete with a smattering of HTML, but that doesn’t really bother me.)

Also, it’s not a beta feature; I’m running QS in stable mode.

Great find…

Ooh! Good call! I checked and for Firefox, you need to be in beta. I’ve moved to beta mode now. Yay ?!

cool! don’t know that I’ll use it, but it’s fun to know all the tricks QS holds anyway.

i tried it on amazon and wow did I get a lot of links waiting for me…

I think that's what I...

I think that’s what I dig, Nick. On its own it might seem sort of meh (“Duh, I already have a browser”). But try selecting a link and tabbing over: now you can put it on the shelf, append it to a “look at later” pile, or what have you. It’s one more way to munge one more piece. Bricks not walls, as Eno might say.

I like how Alcor puts all the hooks in place and lets us figure out how best to put the pieces together. Digital Legos. :-)

Yeah, Amazon’s pretty deep, for sure.

I like how Alcor puts this stuff in at four in the morning and then forgets it’s there, by his own admission…

“Digital Legos” Nice.

Yeah, that program seems to be endlessly amazing. Always something new and powerful to stumble upon. (Tho usually cuz you’ve enlightened us Merlin. :)

Yeah, I like the move to shelf feature. Nice for grabbing images and stuff like that from sites too.

Huh, this doesn’t work for me at all running the newest version of QS with the Safari Bookmarks and History modules in there. QS certianly knows about my bookmarks, for example, but it won’t ever do this “browsing” thing.

Great tip!

However, it doesn’t filter out existing tags inside the A tags, so you get any IMG… and FONT… (yikes!) tags that happen to be in there.

So it didn't work for...

So it didn’t work for me because it wasn’t clear that this is only available as an “advanced” option (turn this on in QS Preferences). It’s a good idea, but it’s made much less useful by its inclusion of every tag on the page…it really ought to filter down to just href links.
