Merlin joins Stikkit advisory board
Merlin Mann | Feb 1 2007
Values of n Blog: Merlin Mann advises I’m happy to announce that I’ve accepted an offer to advise Values of n on the development of their Stikkit web application. In fact, although I’ve been using and loving Stikkit for several months now, I’ve held off talking about it much on 43f until this addition was made official and public1. But, since I stand to have an advisor’s stake in the business as a result of this work, it was important to tell you guys and properly disclose my involvement before doing much gushing in the content well here. I have a pile of tips for how I’m using Stikkit and have been regularly poking Rael, Michael, and crew (to what I imagine is the point of polite professional annoyance) with feature ideas and things I want the app to do (hint: everything). So I’m glad I can finally start sharing this stuff, here and elsewhere. This is the first Advisory Board thing in which I’ve participated (my OmniFocus advising is pro bono and will continue as before), so I’m pretty excited to officially get started. Anyhow, I wanted you to know about this and to say that I’ll be linking back to this post whenever it’s appropriate to remind you of my proud involvement in Stikkit. I am enthused about where this project is headed, and I’m honored that Rael and his team have let me in on their process. 1. Note that folks in Canada can catch a demo of Stikkit I did on Call for Help which I taped in December, before this was approaching officialness. POSTED IN:

Definitely interested in seeing how folks are using Stikkit for GTD. Can’t get my head around it (GTD-wise) when compared to Remember The Milk.
Awesome, Merlin. I've just...
Awesome, Merlin. I’ve just started using stikkit + quicksilver and I’m really impressed. We need some tips from you ASAP (pretty please)! Your brain must be whirring (or have already whirred) with stikkit + quicksliver + gCal + iCal integration… should be some cool things to do here.
Well, maybe you can give...
Well, maybe you can give me some tips that will help me figure out how to use Stikkit. I’m getting this feeling that I just can’t get a handle on all the syntax without putting more brain power into learning it than I feel comfortable with.

I LOVE Stikkit! Usually I play around with applications like this but never actually use them. Stikkit is the one tool I use consistently, for bookmarks, contacts, notes, etc.

Man, I like the look...
Man, I like the look of Stikkit, but I just can’t get my head around it. Something tells me I’m over-complicating it, so some more examples would be wonderful!
I'm afraid of the very...
I’m afraid of the very real possibility that I would lose even these sticky notes! Hmm.. do they make a post-it note printer? Oh, what a wonderful idea! Ok maybe not - BUT it would be a good idea to serve Jello at Franks Cafe on Westshore Blvd!
Congrats Merlin Mann! Help bring us a killer app all in the name of productivity and Jello! What?
At first, I was quite...
At first, I was quite reluctant to try yet another cool new GTD-type tool. But after a few minutes, I think I’m in love. I just hope that more functionality is added, like exporting addresses—sorry, PEEPS—or groups my peeps. By the way, I love the use of the word ‘peep’; it’s so relaxed and informal. Why do we take things so seriosly? One thing I dislike about a lot of tools for implementing GTD is their rigidity. This seemed to be in that class until I’d played around for a few minutes. Oh, I need to add a phone number to my address book? Ctrl+N, “peep: firstname lastname (new line) mobile phone: 555-555-5555”, Ctrl+S. That’s it, and it knows that it’s a “peep.” I think this has a lot of potential, and I hope I’m still using it a month from now.
I have the same question...
I have the same question I always have with these sort of services: Does it store my data locally, in a (more or less) standard format? In other words, is my data still available in a useful form if Stikkit goes belly-up? Call me paranoid, but I just don’t trust my data to someone else’s server or nonstandard formats.
I think it's interesting, but...
I think it’s interesting, but it’s definitely beta software for me- the hoops that I have to jump through to get things to process as tasks or contacts, or to link things correctly is just way too much maintenance for me. And I appear not to be the only one who is unable to import my address book
That said, once it really does get going, it’s really gonna be something- the way it can create outlines (my natural way of thinking) that go right into to dos and match up with the contacts and the calendar and links etc.
Hi Cujo, We spend an inordinate...
Hi Cujo,
We spend an inordinate amount of effort to make sure that what you took the time to type is preserved. While Stikkit turns your “meet sally at 4pm tomorrow” into a to-do and an event, it still keeps that original “meet sally at 4pm tomorrow” text for you as if you’d just jotted it down in a text editor.
And between our Atom feeds (you can subscribe to your Stikkits from a standard RSS reader) and various other output formats (iCal, vCard, json, and of course plain text), you can always grab your Stikkits at any time. (The plain text version even formats your stikkits as a string of stikkits separated by form-feed characters… nothing is removed, only clearly demarcated annotations added whenever absolutely necessary.)
I hope this helps. And feed free to drop me us a line if at help@stikkit.com if this response missed the mark.
Best,
Rael
Ha you brought stikkit down! ...
Ha you brought stikkit down!
I haven't managed to figure...
I haven’t managed to figure out how I can replace Backpack with Stikkit yet. I’m a little depressed that I’m rather invested in Backpack.
On the other hand, I like having a service I pay for, with SSL, to give me some degree of security. I don’t have any expectation of Stikkit sticking (heh) around at the moment. What-ifing is my favorite hobby, what can I say.
p.s., Gratz. I hope one day my opinions matter enough to be advising anybody.

Merlin,
1-Quicksilver plug-in, to automatically append a new to do, or upcoming event to my stikkit; quick, efficient and productive.
2-When sync kGTD it syncs with stikkit; so that if for some reason I can’t get on my Laptop but can on some other computer, I can see all my to dos, etc on the web.
Possible? But those two features would be awesome.
[...] Starting from hyped application...
[…] Starting from hyped application that doesn’t yet exists, like OmniFocus, to recently strategically planned online apps, like Stikkit, which succesfully embarked Merlin Mann from the famous 43folders.com in their advisor’s staff. I think that was, from a PR viewpoint, an extremely good move, and I know for sure that the guys from Omni had the opportunity to do the same. Merlin politely stated that his support for OmniFocus is pro-bono, but the real thing is that his consulting services are a real gem. I mean, not only by their objective value, which I really doubt that can be challenged, but by the visibility and endorsment they could get by offically having Merlin in their team. That would gave them a huge advantage. From what I saw, Merlin took his advisor work very seriously (which I always knew he would) and gave us some insights, the stikkit thing looks pretty promising. Congratulations Merlin!
Now, could we get some sort of mobile version of Stikkit (PDA, Smartphone, etc.) so it would be useful when we’re not tied down to our computers??

Not sure how I’ll use it, but I know I will because it’s just FRICKIN’ COOL!
I am thinking that there...
I am thinking that there must be some cool way to integrate jott.com with stikkit. Imagine pickup up your phone, call the jott number, record yourself a message, “Call bob at 4 pm tomorrow”. Then Jott transcribes it, emails it to your preassigned stikkit email account, stikkit then pulls out the peeps, todos and events.
Voila, voice controlled planning. In theory.
Hey Merlin, make it all work together.

[…] Fellow productivity blogger Merlin Mann (of 43folders fame) has just joined the Stikkit advisory board. I really think this is a win/win situation for everyone involved. Stikkit is an amazing organization app, and have thoroghly enjoyed playing around with it. I’ve decided to use it as my de-facto contact manager for Blogfuse once it’s ready for release. […]

Congrats the the position.
I see that this has a lot of potential. The integration of email, calendar and stickkits are a big feature. But, it is not quite there for me yet.
I am using the d3 GTD System, Gmail and Gcalendar (Google DeskTop) for the a non-integrated solution. For me to switch over, it would have to have more meaningful functionality than my current system. A great way to import my current and archived projects would be great. With the D3 GTD System I have made Nested sliding to-do lists that would be hard to live without.
Have to say, I want...
Have to say, I want to love this app, but they’ve been 43foldered to death, and it’s been next to useless for the past week. Someone didn’t plan for success, and I’m tired of waiting for page reloads. Maybe I’ll get back to it some day…
Neato software, but still a...
Neato software, but still a bit buggy - it is definitely in beta. The peeps feature in particular, is great when it works, but there were quite a few times when it simply failed to recognize a valid peep.
Still, I’d be very interested in checking back once they’ve ironed out all the kinks. Having Merlin on board should help with that! :)

[…] Merlin Mann has just announced his involvement (as a member of the advisory board) with Stikkit, which looks like a really interesting new web application. I am still watching their screencasts and trying to figure out how (if) I could make use of this, but I’m already especially interested in how they extract data (like contact information, event dates, and such) from freeform text. I do wonder how robust it is and how easy it is to correct Stikkit when it makes a bad guess about what kind of information you’re entering. […]
