The Merlin Show: Interview with Jonathan Coulton

002: Interview: Jonathan Coulton | The Merlin Show

My new video podcast launches today with an interview I recently did with Jonathan Coulton.

JoCo is an internet troubadour and former developer who may be best known for wonderful songs like “Code Monkey” and “Skullcrusher Mountain,” although he also has gigs podcasting for Popular Science as well as playing guitar for his best friend (and sworn nemesis) John Hodgman.

We talk about life as an independent artist, including how Jonathan captures ideas and may or may not be similar to Michael Jackson.

We’ll have a new episode of The Merlin Show every morning this week, then slide into an (approximately) once-a-week schedule for new episodes.

Please consider subscribing via iTunes or Democracy, or just point the “podcatacher” of your choice at http://feeds.themerlinshow.com/TheMerlinShow

Merlin, I love the video podcast. I think the quality is awesome and the two camera shoot is pretty professional. BTW, I loved you on TWIT this week. With you and Veronica, I think it was easily one of the best episodes ever.

If this were “PRON” the money shot would be when you ask if your subject/victim uses a method of “ubiquitous capture”. We can rename this the “Index Card Shot” for our purposes..! “Oh yeah, baby, coat me with it!” Or as Anne Lamott says, “Pammy, Demi Moore”!

Good work, Merlin!

Hey Merlin,

Something is up with the Hi-Res version of Episode 001 (Hello) from iTunes. It only plays for about 30 seconds, then goes blank. The file size is also mysteriously small (2.1 MB). Just a heads-up.

Hey Merlin, Loved the new show....

Hey Merlin, Loved the new show. Like Ryan said above the high quality episode 001 craps out at around 30 seconds.

I downloaded the episodes at work first and watched on my lunch. Then went home and downloaded there to share with my husband. I really wanted to share with him the Jonathan Coulton interview because it was like listening to my husband, minus actually quitting his job to do music. It was great for him to hear from another musician who took the plunge and left the security of a “typical” job. I hope watching that will help give him the confidence to move forward.

Looking forward future episodes :)

I think this is one of my favorite podcasts thus far. A few suggestions… get the camera guy a tripod esp. for 003: Interview: Jeffrey Veen. Enable comments on the http://www.themerlinshow.com/ website so that everything about the show is over there :D. It’s great thus far and I’m subscribed for life! PS: Love the little music at the beginning and end, very cool.

Love the show!

The level of Merlin on the interweb is certainly increasing — my mother keeps watching these online quilting shows, and I’m always half-expecting to suddenly see you in there talking about systems or whatever. Some nerdy little hack to get more quilting done.

Anyway, it’d be great if you would do an episode featuring Ze Frank called The Merlin Show with Ze Frank (pure synergism right there).

I think this show thing...

I think this show thing is a great idea!

Not to be pedantic, but what’s the deal with the main Merlin Show Logo ( http://www.themerlinshow.com/files/minnelli_logo.png )? Merlin is looking out, when he should be looking in. The bar within the movie has him looking in (right facing). My point is that having the “Merlin Head” looking to the viewers right —> has the reader looking in towards the content, while looking out <—- has him looking off the page.

Jut my thoughts on what initially caught my eye.

Thanks and I look forward to continued captivating content from All Things Merlin. d

Congrats on the latest venture… I think it’s got legs or a long tail or some other impressive anatomical feature that people will admire for quite some time.

Just to say it, the first episode “Hello” was out of sync for me…

Nice show. I love the...

Nice show. I love the music and the fact that you’ve filmed the interview in a coffee shop - kinda gives the whole thing a classy-yet-quirky style. Or at least it does in my head.

Quick comment about ubiquitous capture: in his book Sometimes the Magic Works, Terry Brooks (award winning best selling fantasy novelist guy) talks about how he used to engage in ubiquitous capture, but then later on went onto a kind of idea-darwinism type of dealie - just letting things swirl around in his head, and if they’re good they’ll stay, but if they’re not they’ll die back and it won’t matter. Which I find kinda interesting.

I also think it’s insane, as I’m very much into ubiquitous capture myself, but I guess it goes to show how different methods work for different people.

Great, great job on the...

Great, great job on the first show, Merlin. This is the first video podcast I really plan on watching - all the others lose my attention eventually, but this one is really well done. The combination of humor and actual conversation is just great, and your choice of music is both interesting and fun. (I’ve already visited www.thelongwinters.com)

May I also commend you on the cinematography. I was amazed, during the interview, when the video cut to a different camera angle - one of JoCo’s face. (It happens for the first time at 3:18, I think) Multiple camera angles?!? What is this, television?

Finally, I liked the length. 15 minutes was not too much of a pain to fit into my schedule, but it also wasn’t so short that I didn’t feel I was missing value. Some of those one and a half hour monstrosities - who has time to watch those, much less do post-production on them? But if you wanted to do a hour-long show once or twice a year, that would be a good idea (Maybe for the Christmas show :-) ) One hour every week wouldn’t be so bad either, but it would be generally harder for me to see it, at least.

Keep up the good work, Merlin! I’ve subsccribed!
