What's in my menubar?
Merlin Mann | Apr 27 2007
Seems like every time another Mac user looks over my shoulder, they freak out over the number of little icons I have up in my menubar. And — like all Mac geeks — we have to immediately start trading information, learning tricks, and sharing tips. I’m sure you know the drill by now. If you were looking over my shoulder right now (and I hope that you are not) here’s the stuff you’d see in my menubar. The larger version on the Flickr will, where appropriate, let you mouseover for the name and a link, but I’ll save you the trouble of a click by repeating the links below.

Just a thought for you....
Just a thought for you. Usually apps featured in the menubar are active. that means these guys are eating up some RAM and maybe even some CPU. OS X is great and managing RAM relationships, but it’s something to be aware of.
I disagree with you regarding Spotlight - it’s not crap at all. I know it does not suite everyone, but that does not make it crap. It suits my needs with thousands of emails and files, and many hundreds of folders. It finds everything, pronto.
... is there no end!...
… is there no end! I think I’ve heard it all and then some new killer app/utility shows up. I am using both quicksilver and butler so go figure…
Out with old and in...
Out with old and in with the new — you gotta try the new DeskTopple Pro! It replaces SpiritedAway, Backdrop, and menushade all in one app. It’s great!
Now all you need is...
Now all you need is a menu bar app that hides unused menu bar icons, and you’re all set.
Glad to see you're still...
Glad to see you’re still on iScrobbler and not “upgrading” to the ridiculous app Last.fm tried to push on us when they redesigned!
I’m curious as to why you’ve chosen to have QS, for example, in your menubar - what functionality do you get by having it there? Just invoke! And if it freezes, so does the menubar, yeah? Same thing for Growl - I can’t see why I’d ever need to seek out Growl, it comes to me!
I’m one for the slim-as-possible menubar, and I must say I’m a bit surprised to see this circus!

Often seen your menu bar line up on macbreak. Very interested in skitch, but appears its only in “private beta” at the moment. Thanks for the links!

Another vote for WeatherDock; much better than WeatherSnitch, having tried them both.
My others:
wClock: the menu clock that can say “Sat, April 28th 9:45am”
Spell Catcher: if you type for a living, this is a must-have. Forget the spelling features; it’s the key expander thingie that saves you a ton of time. Never type out tags or that 40-word boiler-plate response again.
PhoneValet: record any phone conversation easily

That is a long list of items on your menubar. I would often try to keep mine as clean as possible. Too much items sometimes make me feel distracted.

There is now a universal build of FuzzyClock on the Objectpark site. I had that for a long time but was to lazy to build the DMG.
Have fun with it.

Fuzzy clock came out with a Universal Binary today (april 28) I noticed that he commented on the lack of one on the flickr inmage, and it’s almost as if they heard him and responded.

Hehehe, a friend forwarded me the link to the Flickr page and I saw the comment about the missing universal build of FuzzyClock. That was just the final kick I needed to prepare a disk image with a universal version.
Everyone asking for it got a universal binary over the past year, but I never bothered about building a disk image because I saw not much people looking for it.
I hope you like it.

You have trouble with the dreaded Finder Hang when you forget to unmount a shared volume, right? Try DropCopy http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16250
It’s a Bonjour file transfer tool. You just drag a file onto the little circle on the desktop and it pops up a list of other computers on the network running dropcopy. Drop the file and it, well, copies. No need to mount drives for transfers. And it’s free.
