Tracks::GTD who's using it?
wwalker | Jan 24 2006
I came to read this forum to get ideas before starting a Ruby on Rails (a web development system) project to do 43 folders. I found in nearly the last post I read a reference to Tracks::GTD (http://www.rousette.org.uk/projects/). Being a Ruby on Rails app, you can just install Ruby, then Rails on your computer (Windows, Linux, OSX...) and in a few minutes have Tracks running. It looks good to me so far. Who else is using it? any comments or pointers? Wayne 46 Comments

I'm using it. After a little configuring, it worked well for me. It's a great app if you take your laptop with you, or sit at the computer for most of your work. As a Computer Science student, I found it very useful. It's a little cumbersome though when you need to look up something to tell someone, because you have to boot up your machine. Also, some non-cs teachers don't like laptops being always on during class, or you typing a lot. I actually no longer use Tracks as I've found it just not realistic for me to have my laptop with me all the time. But I will say it's the best app I used for GTD that is available on linux. Have you checked out php-gtd? That project is getting pretty cool. »
Now, if Tracks wasn't so...Submitted by emory on January 25, 2006 - 4:07pm.
Now, if Tracks wasn't so Web2.0 you could reliably use it with a mobile device. *that* would be the bee's knees. »

thanks codemac I added "time spent" to the actions (gotta love Ruby on Rails, I'd never used it before and added a new, functional field in 5 minutes :). I carry my notebook everywhere. I am a software developer so it's always there. I'll look at php-gtd though. I've been trying to decide whether to put Tracks on my colo'd server or keep it on my notebook. »

emory, I'm certainly not a Web 2.0 or Ajax fan, but it is very nice in a regular browser. I can't stand using a phone browser, so I'm the wrong one to judge mobile apps. I think mobile apps should be voice channel (www.unwiredbuyer.com like). Of course since I wrote uwb I'm a little biased :) »
If you have your notebook...Submitted by codemac on January 27, 2006 - 1:00pm.
If you have your notebook with you, I'd almost suggest not putting it up on a server. The pros of having it when you don't have internet on the go might be better than having it on a colo'd server. That's just another conditional of when and where your NA's are accessable »
I REALLY would like to...Submitted by michaelramm on February 14, 2006 - 7:06am.
I REALLY would like to use it...but setting it up is not for the Linux noob (like me). I emailed the dev and they got back very quickly and nice and it helped that one problem that I had. But it ships with a default webserver setup (that is not Apache) and I (cause I don't know...that is the noob part) don't know how to try to reconfigure it to use Apache. It uses WEBrick (which I have never heard of) as the default webserver to run on. I am not sure my Rails is configured correctly, nor Ruby for that manner. I followed a guide that I found and I thought that it was installed. But now I am not so sure. So, if I cannot have it running by the end of the week (2/17) I am going to abort the attempt and move on to something else. Michael »
Well, I've set it up...Submitted by Jestre on February 14, 2006 - 5:32pm.
Well, I've set it up several times on various laptops, so if there's a particular issue you're encountering, let us know. It is a nice application. »
I have gotten the tracks...Submitted by michaelramm on February 14, 2006 - 7:08pm.
I have gotten the tracks database setup with the content.sql data. Now I am trying to get apache to recognize the install. I have never heard of WEBrick and the only apache mention is a little snippet to put into httpd.config about the virtualhost. I don't know enough about apache to understand the setup of the config file and such. I have tried my IP address:3000 and nuthin. I tried localhost:3000 and nuthin. I tried 0.0.0.0:3000 (the WEBrick default) and nuthin. Michael »

If you are going to be accessing Tracks from the machine on which it is installed, (e.g. I have it installed on a laptop which I carry with me), as opposed to trying to access it from another machine via the Internet, then you do not have to do anything with Apache. Basically, the steps are: 1) Install the prerequisite software, i.e. Ruby, Rails (probably via Gems), and a database (likely MySQL or SQLite) 2) Configure the database server and add the data definitions 3) Modify the Tracks config files to reflect the database access information, e.g. cp database.yml.tmpl database.yml and then edit it to reflect the information you configured in step 2 (username, password) 4) Do the same for the settings.yml file to modify your date format preferences, and set your email address. 5) Start Tracks and see what flies: 5) Access your installation via the installed WEBrick server, e.g. type the following URL into your web browser: http://127.0.0.1:3000/signup">http://localhost:3000/signup or http://127.0.0.1:3000/signup to add the initial admin user (you). On return trips, you can go to http://localhost:3000/login to get back in. If you've done all of this, and it still doesn't work, then it would be handy to know your distro, how you installed Ruby, Ruby on Rails, etc. Which database software? And any errors. »

Michael, I hope you got GTD working with webrick. I sue it all the time. I had surgery 2 weeks ago, so just got back to this forum. If you need any help still, feel free to email me.
